srncrrrcarron formi g part of Letters Patent No. 747,898, dated December 22, 1 3- l -F Application filed April 18,1903- Serial No. 153,321- (No specimens.) I
To all whom it mal concern,-
Beit known that we, THOMAS M. STAcK and WALTER R. PE-CK, citizens of the United States, residing at New Milford,:county-of 5 Litchfield, State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Composition of Matter to be Used for the Removal of Paint, Varnish, &c., from Woodwork Preparatory to Refinishing, of which the following is a specifica- [0 tion. The object of this invention is to provide a composition that will quickly efiect theremoval of either paint or varnish from surfaces which from long use or abuse have become marred to such an extent'as to make refinishing necessary, it being required under such conditions that all coats of paint or varnish composing the original finish down to the bare wood be removed before the refinzo ishingprocess can be commenced. It is furpurpose thatit shall be perfectly safe in use in that it shall not injure the hands of the party using it and that there be no fumes arising therefrom injurious to health, and, furthermore, that it shall not discolor or raise 1 the grain of the wood to which it may be applied.
We are of course aware that various meth- 0 ods have heretofore been employed for the removal of paint and varnish, among'whichmay be mentioned compositions including as ingredients caustics, potashes, 850., whose use is objectionable, owing to the fact that seriously injure the hands if brought into contact therewith, and, furthermore, that the inhalation of fumes arising therefrom is seriously injurious to the health of the user.
they are destructive to animal tissue and will These objections are, in fact, soserious as to.
four gallons; alcohol, (wood or grain,) four gallons; benzole, four gallons; acetone, three gallons; sixty-two-degree benzin, three gallons. These ingredients are to be thoroughly mingled by'agitation.
In using the above-named compositional coat of the composition is applied to the surface to be refinished, using for the purpose a brush or a cloth well saturated with the composition. The composition is allowed to remain on the surface until it assumes agelati be removed. The operator may then with awide-bladed spatula or putty-knife remove the entire coating. The surface should then be washed ofi to removeany of the softenedcoating that may not have been removed by the spatula, using a cloth saturated with I either benzin or wood-alcohol, as may be preferred. This leaves the surface perfectly clean and after being allowed to dry it is ready for refinishing. Should the old coating on the surface tobe refinished be a light one and not specially refractory, it may be readily removed by a brisk rubbing with a cloth well saturated with the composition. Thecomplete removal of theold coating'will be'apparent by the appearance of the bare'wood,
after which the surface may be washed off as above described with'eithe'r benzin or woodalcohol. If an old coating is to be removed from moldings or from any surfaces containing crevices, it will be found preferable to apply the composition with a brush rather than a cloth, as the latter will not enter thecrevices as well. i i
We wish it distinctly understood that our invention is not limited to any exact proportions of the ingredients enumerated- As stated above, either grain-alcohol or wood-alcohol may be used. In practice'we have 1 found wood-alcohol perfectly effective. -Furthermore, while we preferably use the ingredients stated in their purest form their use in the purest form is not essential to the operativeness of the composition, as the ingredients may be used in crude form instead of refined, if preferred.
We are of course well aware that benzin and wood-alcohol have been used as ingredients in various cleansing and removing compositions and only make claim to these ingredients when used in connection with amyl acetate, benzole, and acetone.
Having thus described our invention, We claim The herein-described composition of matter consisting of amyl acetate, alcohol, benzole, acetone and benzin substantially as described and forthe purpose specified.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS M. STACK. WALTER R. PEOK.
