T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CON CERN: y
Be it known that I, DvID K. HOXSIE, of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new andimproved Instruments .'or `'.l'ools for Making Eyelets.; and I do herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of th'e same dra\vings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is av longitudinal view and section of my improved eyelet-instruments or tools. Figure 2 represents the various stagesof the operation of makin'geyelets with my said instruments or tools. Figure 3 represents said instruments `in the act of performing their respective operations. l i c Similar letters or numbers indicate likepartsin all the iigures. -My improved eyelet-instruments are calculated to inake an eyelet from a planchet or disk of sheet metal, by first converting the planchet into a tube, with one closedend, and then cutting out the closed end, and expanding that4 edge of `the tube to formthe ange. My inventibn for this pur'pose consists-` First, of a. movable f01:ming-punch,'with a bevelled end, and a cavity lin the end, forming thereby a sharp concentric edge, forfcentring and conning the punch to the centre ofthe planchet, so that it'will be drawn evenly upon the cylindrical'end of the punch. d
Secondly, my invention consists. of a stationary die, with an entrance ofsuitable 'diameter to receive a. planchet of the requisite size to forni an eyelet; a drawing-cavity beneath, of a conical form,(or nearly so,) for gradually 'contracting and drawing the periphery of the planchet upon the cylindrical part or end of the punch, above mentioned, WithaI contracted throat below, for drawing the contracted planchet into a tube around the punch; and an expanding-cavity at ther-ear of the die, to shape the flange of the eyelet after the closed end of the tube is cut out by suitable means.
Thirdly,-my invention consists cfa movable concentric cutting-punch or tube, for cutting out. the closed end ofthe tube on the punch at the rear of the die, and a bevelled edge, for expanding and turning-over'the severed edge of the tube into the cavity at the rear of the die, to form ther-flange on the eyglet. 'Y
To enable others skilled in .the art to make and use my invention in accordance with the moden'hich I haveadopted andrembodied therein, ,I'will proceed to describe the same. i' v In the drawings, No. 1 represents the movable forming`punch,No. 2' the stationary die, and No. 3 the movable cutting-punch, above referred to. c i The'forming-punch, N o. 1, it'will be observed, is cylindrical near the end, at e, bounded by a square shoulder,- such cylindrical portion corresponding with the length and bore ofthe Vproposed tubewhich is to be made, for aftericonversion into an eyelet. The end of tl1ispunch CNO.' 1) is bevelled ata.; andin the end there is acentre or cavity, t,V which, withthe bevelled end, forms a sharp concentric edge, which, when pressed against the planchet (of softer metal) as it is'h'eld at the entrance ofthe die, penetrates the metal suiiiciently tc prevent it from departing fromits central position with respect to.both punchV and die, and insures .an 'even and uniform drawing of the metal on all sides around the said punch,`and, :in consequence, the formation of acperfect tube; The punch, No. I1, is intended to be inserted and operated in' the plungerof a power-press, such as is generally' used by jewellers and others in forming like shapes of sheet metal. The die, No. 2, is intended to bestationary, and is secured inthe bed-piece ci" a similar power-press; and it will be observed that' said die has acircular entrance', n, calculated to-receive a planchet orvdisk of metal; also that, below this entrance-end, there is aconical drawing-cavity, s, which is contracted into a throat, zu, corresponding in .diameter 'to that of the lexterior of the proposed tube, vrvhich throat 4finally expands intol a y cavity, r, at the rear of the die, corresponding to the shape of the flange ofthe proposed eyelet, said throat a? and cavity 'r constituting an eyelet-forming die at the rear orbottom of the drawing-part of the die; but, inverted `from the position, such eyeletfformin'g partis placed in all other dies for making eyelets heretofore in use or known. Y i
The 'movable cutting-punch, No. 3, it lwill` be seen, is tubular; and this isfintended. to ,be operated in a plunger working at the rear of the die, and similar, in alll respects,` tothat whichoperates the punch No.1.Vv The bore of'this tubular punch (No. 3) corresponds with and iits upon 'the end' ofpunch No. 1. v The end is reference being hadto the accompanying bevelledat g, and forms a sharp concentric cutting-edge on the extreme end, at c, so that, when it is pressed agcinstthe closed end of the eyelet, in the manner shown in the third operationoftig. 3, the closed end of Y the` tube will be cut out, and be deposited within the bore of the cutter, and, at the same time, vthe bevelled end of the cutting-punch will expandthe severed edge ofthe tube against thel surface of the cavity at the rear of the die, and thus formthe flange upon' theVeyelet-tube, asshown in iig. 2,1%. 4, the -first` operation of the said l instruments, as shown in iig. 3, being to deposit and press the planchet into the drawing-cavity s" of the die, -the second operation being to push the planchet through the throat :v of the die, and convert it into` a tube with a. closed'end,-which protrudes-from .the rear of the die, convenientto have the third operation performed upon the'closedend by the cutting-punch, No. 3, in the manner shown.
" Havingdescribed my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure byvLetters Patent, is
A1. The movable forming-punch, No. 1, constructed with a cylindrical shape or former, cfa/shoulder, z', ar
bevelled end, a, and a centre cavity, t, when combined with mechanism so as to operate substantially as described, for the purpose specified. y y V 2. I claim the stationary die, No. 2, constructed with a circular entra-nce, n, a conica-l drawing-cavity, s, a
throat, and 'an' expaudingmavity, r, at the reurnwhen combined with.y mechanism so as to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
8. I- claim the movable cutting-punch, No. 3, constructed'in a tubular form, with a. bevelled surface, g, and.-
a. concentric cutting-edge, c, when combined with mechanism, such as herein described, so as 'to opexate'substantially as and for the purpose specified. v-
4; I claim the method, herein described, of forming an eyeletlby first converting a planchet or disk of metal' intova tube with-a. closed end, and then cutting out theclosed lenrd,`and expanding thisA severed edge of the tube, to' formtheange, by means substantially as described.
5. I claim so combininga. drawing-punch and an open drawing-die, constructed substantiallyas described, that the plachetofmetal from which the eyelet is to be made will enter in at the front end of the die, and, passing through, be delivered completely formed into an eyelet at the rear end of the die, substantially as described.
