METHOD OF PREVENTING THE WARPING AND UNDULATING 0F XYLOLITH FLOORS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 747,110, dated December 15, 1903. Application filed October 3, 1902. Serial No- 125,800- (No specimensd To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDoLF ZELLENKA, manufacturer, a citizen of the Empire of Austria-Hungary, residing in Vienna, Austria- Hungary, have invented a certain new and Improved Method for Preventing the Warping and Undulating ofXylolilh Floors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Floors constructed of xylolith (a compound produced by submitting a mixture of sawdust and sand or other similar mineral substances, mixed with sufficient liquid, to a very high pressure, forming a sheet resembling wood) have the well-known disadvantage that they possess a Very strong tendency to warp, and
for this reason their application is exceedingly limited.
This invention has for its object improved means for preventing the warping and undulating of Xylolith floors, while at the same time the material is firmly secured to the supporting parts. To this end the rough floor to be covered when constructed of wood is laid with open-work or reticulated plates of sheetiron-as, for instance, described in German Patents Nos. 45,916, 84,345, 91,182-whicl1 are firmly secured to the wooden support. Upon the floor thus furnished with the reticulated plates the Xylolith is applied in the known manner, whereby the latter penetrates through the openings in the plates, so as to be in contact with the under floor itself, upon which it is then supported, and at the same time completely'covers the said plates.
If, as in ships, for example, it is necessary to cover iron floors, the plates may be screwed to the floor and the xylolith applied as before stated. In this case it is advantageous to allow the xylolith covering to harden partially and then eifect a series of cross-cuts to divide the xylolith covering into separate squares ofabout fifty centimeters. The crosscuts should be made with thin knife-blades and so that they are hardly visible after the hardening of the Xylolith, while yet permitting the latter to yield to the alterations in the form of the iron ship construction without cracking.
In the accompanying drawings, whichillustrate my invention, Figure l is a plan View, partly broken away; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof on the line A B of Fig. 1.

Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patout, is-- 1 Improved method for preventing the warping and undulating of xylolith floors consisting in placing upon the supporting-surface and fastening thereto reticulated metal plate and then applying the xylolith composition until it completely covers the reticulated plate.
