UNITED STATES Patented. December 15, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR O. BOURDEAU, OF BATTLEOREEK, MICHIGAN, ASSIGN OR TO MALTA VITA PURE FOOD COMPANY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, A CORPO-- RATION, OF NEW JERSEY.
MEANS FOR FILLING PACKAGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,666, dated December 15, 1903.
To all whom it may 007608777 Be it known that I, ARTHUR O. BOURDEAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battlecreek, in the county of Oalhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Filling Packages, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
-My invention relates to means for depositro ing a given quantity of materialin packages and rapidly conducting the packages to and from the place of filling; and it has for its object to provide improved and simple means for accomplishing these ends.
My invention consists in certain features of novelty in the construction, combination,and arrangement of parts by which the said objects and certain other objects hereinafter appearing are attained, all as fully described 26 with reference to the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Inthe said drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved apparatus, partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the package-conveyer, the filler being omitted; and Fig. 3 is a detail view;
1 is the lower end of a hopper in which the material withwhich the packages are to be filled is stored and the lower. end of which hopper is provided with a valve or slide 2, whereby the fiow therefrom .may be controlled. This hopper deposits successively into a series of measures 3, which are mounted upon a vertical shaft 4 and revolved in a horizontal plane successively under a chute 5, leading downwardly from the lower side of valve or slide 2, so that as the measures 3 pass under chute 5 they will fill with the ma- 4o terialthereimthe funnel 6 beingarranged to one side of the shaft 4, and as the measures 3 register with a bottom chute 6, arranged on the opposite side of the shaft 4, they will discharge by gravity, and the discharge may be caught in one of the packages 7, held thereunder by the operator. These packages 7, which are ordinarily composed of paper and require some preparation preparatory to filling, are prepared by an attendant and held at the hand of the operator in a conven- 5o ient position by an endless carrier-belt 8, which travels continuously under a stop 9, which crosses the belt and serves to arrest the movement of the packages 7= while the belt continues to travel, thus enabling the filling operator to take the packages one at a time from the forward end of the line as needed and permitting the one who prepares the packages to work ad Zt'bt'tum without regard to the extent of the accumulation of unfilled packages-on the conveyer. After the package is filled the filling operator releases it, and it travels with the conveyer away from the filling-machine and may be closed and'prepared for packing by another operator.
The stop 9 is in the form of a strip or crossbar extending athwart the conveyer 8 and having its ends secured to a pair of guidebars 10, which extend upwardly to uprights 11, so as to hold the packages from capsizing and at the same time permit the forward one to be readily picked out of the line without knocking the others down.
The conveyer 8 may be composed of canvas, cloth, leather, or other suitable material, and it is arranged flush with a table 12.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an apparatus for the purpose described the combination of an endless-belt conveyer, a stop extending across said conveyer and a package-filling machine arranged adjacent to said stop, substantially as set forth. v
2. In an apparatus for the purpose described the combination of an endless-belt conveyer, a stop extending across said conveyer, the guides 10 extending upwardly from said conveyer at the sides thereof for 0 holding packages onthe conveyer in an upright position, and a package-filling machine arranged adjacent to said stop, substantially I package-filling machine arranged over said as set forth. conveyor adjacent to said stop, substantially 3. In an apparatus for the purpose deas set forth. scribed the combination of a table, an end- ARTHUR C. BOURDEAU. 5 less-belt conveyer having one fold thereof ar- Witnesses:
