The invention relates to steam-engines; and its object is to provide a new and improved rotary valve which is simple and durable in advantage. l
construction, very effective in operation, and arranged to accurately control the admission and exhaustiof the motive agent, and thereby insure an easy running of the engine and utilization of the motive agent to the fullest The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will -be more' fully described hereinafter and A practical embodiment ofthe invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters-cf reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views. f

The engine on which the improved rotary valve is applied is provided with the usual cylinder A, in which reciprocates a piston B, connected by suitable means with the main shaft C of the`engine,vas plainly indicated in Fig. 1. From the ends of the cylinder A lead cylinder-ports a and b to register with ports c and d, respectively, formed in a cylindrical valve-casing E, secured to one side of the cylinder A, as plainly illustrated in the drawings. The valve-casing E is provided at or near its middle with an inlet-pipe F, connected with a boiler or other suitable source of motive-agent supply, and from the ends of the said valve-casing E lead exhaust-pipes Grand G for carrying o the exhaust motive agent.
Withinthe cylindrical casing-E-are ar' ranged valve-heads H and H', spaced apart and located on opposite sides of the inletpipe F, and the saidlvalve-heads H and H are secured Vona valve-stem I, extending through a stuffing-box J and carrying at its lower end i a bevel gear-wheel K in mesh with a bevelpinion K on the shaft C, so that when the engine is in motion and the shaft C is rotated then Athe-pinion K'- imparts a rotary motion to the bevel gear-Wheel K to rotate the stem I and the heads H and H-, secured thereon. The gearing described is so proportioned that theshaft C makes two revolutions to one revolution ofthe valve-heads H and H.
The valve-head H is provided with two inlet-ports e and c', (see Figs. 2 and 5,) leading from the inner faces of the valve-head to the peripherythereof at diametrically opposite points, and eXhaust-portsfand f lead from the periphery of the head H to the outer face of the said head, and the said ports e, e', f, and f are adaptedto register alternately with the port c, leading to the cylinder-port c.
The valve-head H is provided with inletports e2 and es, similar to the portse and e', and Vthe said valve-head H' is also provided with exhaust-ports]c2 andf, similar to the eXha-ust-portsfandf, above mentioned. The ports e2, e3, f2, and f3 are adapted to register alternately with the port d, leading to the Valve-head H register with the port c at vthe time the exhaust-ports]c2 and fsof the valvehead H register with the port d, (see Fig. 2,) and whenthe exhaust-portsf and f' of the valve-head .I-Lregister with the port c then theinlet-ports e? and e3 of the valve-head H registermwith-the port d, as plainly indicated in Fig,3. Nowv .when the several parts are in the positionshown in Fig. 2 then the steam passing into the valve-casing E by way of the inlet-pipe F passes through the ports e, c, and a into the upper end of the cylinder A to act on the piston- 1By therein to push the `latter downward in the direction of the arrow ct. The steam in front of this piston B nowpasses down the cylinder A by way of the ports d, and f2 to the lower end of the valve-casingE and through the exhaust-pipe-G to the outer air. As the valve-heads H and H are rotating in unison it is evident that whenthe pis- ICO ment with the ports cand d, and the ports f and e2 now move in register with the said ports` c and d, respectively, whereby the live steam is now directed through the ports e,
d, and b into the lower end of the cylinder to force the piston B upward in the inverse direction of the arrow a', and the exhaust-steam in front of this piston now passes out of the upper end of the cylinder by way of the ports a, c, and f, the upper end of the casing E, and the exhaust-pipe G. When the piston B nears the end of its upward stroke, then the further rotation Of the valve-heads H and H has brought the port e' in register with the port c and the port f3 in register with the port d, so that live steam now passes again into the upper end of the cylinder by way of the head H, while the exhaust from the lower portion of the cylinder passes out by way Of the head H' to the exhaust-pipe G'.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A rotary valve having a cylindrical valvehead, provided with a pair of inlet-ports and and a pair of Outlet-ports, the pairs of ports being disposed at angles one to the other, and the ports in one pair extending from diametrical points on the periphery of the head through one face thereof, and the other pair of ports extending from the periphery of the head through the other face thereof, as set forth.
2. A rotary valve comprising a revolving valve stern, and spaced cylindrical valveheads secured on the said stem, the valveheads having inlet-ports leading from the inner faces of the heads to the periphery thereof, at diametrically opposite points, and the said valve -heads having exhaust ports leading from diametrical points on the periphery of the heads to the outer faces thereof, as set forth.
3. A rotary valve comprising a cylindrical valvecasing having an inlet at the middle and exhausts at the ends, a rotary valve-stem in the said casing, and cylindrical valve-heads secured on the said stem and spaced from each other at opposite sides ofthe inlet, each valvehead having inletports leading from the inner face of the head to the periphery thereof, at diametrically opposite points, and outlet-ports leading from diametrically Opposite points on the periphery of the head, to the outer face thereof, as set forth.
4. A rotary valve comprising a cylindrical f valve casing having an inlet at the middle and exhausts at the ends, a rotary valve-stem in the said casing, and cylindrical valve-heads secured on the said stem and spaced from each other at Opposite sides of the inlet, each valvehead having inlet ports leading from the inner face of the head to the periphery thereof, at diametrically opposite points, and Outlet-ports leading from diametrically opposite points on the periphery of the head, to the Outer face thereof, the said inlet and exhaust ports having their peripheral ends disposed alternately and in the same plane, a set forth.
5. A rotary valve having a valve-casing provided with an inlet at the middle and exhausts at the ends, and spaced valve-heads in the said casing, rotating in unison, the heads having inlet-ports and exhaust-ports, Of which the inlet-ports lead from the inner faces of the heads to the periphery thereof, and the exhaust-ports lead from the periphery of the heads to the outer faces thereof, the peripheral ends of the inlet-ports of one head being arranged in the same axial plane as that containing the exhaust-ports of the other head, as set forth.
6. A rotary valve, comprising a cylinder having cylinder-ports, a valve-casing on the said cylinder, having ports in register with the said cylinder-ports, the valve-casing having an inlet at or near the middle and exhausts at the ends, spaced cylinder-heads mounted to rotate in the said casing, spaced from each other on Opposite sides of the said inlet, each valve-head having inlet-ports leading from the inner face of the head to the periphery thereof, at diametrically opposite points, the outlet-ports leading from diametrically opposite points of the periphery of the head, to the outer face thereof, the peripheral ends of the inlet-ports of one head being arranged in the same axial plane as that containing the exhaust-ports of the other head, 'a valve-stem carrying the said heads, a bevel gear-wheel on the said stem, and a bevel-pinion secured on the main shaft of the engine, in mesh with the said bevel gear-wheel, to rotate the said valve-heads once for every two revolutions of the main shaft, as set forth.
7. In the construction of a cylindrical rotary valve, a valve-head having both ends hollow and having four longitudinal ports On the cylindrical side, two opposite ports of the four being Open to one hollow end and the two other ports being Open to the other hollow end, as set forth.
8. The combination with a cylindrical valvecasing having a steam-inlet intermediately of its ends and an exhaust at each end, of two cylindrical rotary valve-heads in the casing, each valve-head having both ends hollow and provided with two pairs of ports, one pair being open to one end of the head and the other pair to the opposite end of said head, as set forth.
