PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES LOUIS cAvANAUeI-I, on CANTON, OHIO.
YGLOBE OR MANTLE PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,460, dated December 8, 1903.
Application filed June 29 1903.
T a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES LOUIS CAvA- NAUGH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Globe or Mantle Protector, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in protectors for lamp globes or chimneys and incandescent mantles, an object being to provide a device for this purpose thatrwill be simple and inexpensive in construction and by means of which a chimney, globe, or mantle when the lamp is not in use will be fully protected from dust and dirt. l
I will describe a globe and mantle protector embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims..
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a sectional elevation of a pr0- tector embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective viewv thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation showing a modified form of protector. Fig. 4 is a perspective View thereof, and Fig. 5 shows another modification.
Aboard, or light metal.
Referring rst to the example of my improvement shown in Figs. 1 and 2, l-designatos the body portion of the protector, which is slightly tapered, the smaller end being at the top, and this top is closed by a cap 2. The
body and cap may be made of any suitable material-such, for instance, as paper, card- At its upper end the protector is provided with'a hook projection 3, by means of which it may be suspended when not in use, and at one side it is provided with a handle or finger-piece 4 for convenience in placing or removing it. Secured to the lower end is a dust-guard 5., consisting of yielding material-such, for instance, as paper. This guard has a portion extended to the inner side of the body, so as to engage against the base of a lamp-chimney or against a lamp-burner, and it also has an upwardlyextended portion at the outer side of the body. This guard is made full or in plaits, so that this clip is a finger-piece l2.
Serial No. 163,459. (No model.)
it may be easily passed over a chimney or the like and when in position will move inward to engage therewith.
In Figs. 3 and 4 the body consists of two telescopic members 6 7, so that it may be adjusted in length to a chimney or globe. 4The upper member 7 consists of an apron of flexible paper or the like attached to the top 8, and on this top 8 is a suspending-ring 9. The guard l0 in this example is adjustably connected to the member b., As here shown, this guard is attached to a thin metal band 11, which is passed around the body portion or member 6 and secured by a clip 11%, and on By this arrangement when the guard becomes torn or Worn out a new onev may be put in its place. The guard is also readily fitted to protectors of all kinds.
In Fig. 5 I have shown the body portion of the protector as adjustable in circumference. The body material l2 has its edges overlapped a`nd secured by clips 13, which pass through perforations near the end portions, and a plurality of such perforations 14 may be provided atone end. This protector (shown in Fig. 5) is also provided with a guard .15,also arranged at its lower end.
It Will be understood that any suitable material may be employed in the construction of the protector.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A protector for the purpose described, comprising a hollow body portion closed at its top, and a dust-guard of flexible material on the lower end thereof, the said guard having IOO I the lower end of the body portion, the said l for passing respectively around the inner and Io guard having portions for passing respeoouter sides of the body portion. bivelyaround theinnerandouter sides of the In testimony whereof I have signed my body portion. name to this specification in the presence of 4. A protector for the purpose described, two subscribing Witnesses.
