To ail whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN MURPHY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Kanangaroa, Fordell, in the Colony of New Zealand, have invented a new and useful Animal-Cover; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip- 'ing the liability to choke or chafe inherent in the ordinary manner of fastening. The means provided consist of a rod, of metal or other suitable weighty material, that is bent into approximately V shape. The two members of the V are then bent backward near their top ends and are each formed with an eye upon its extremity. Upon each side of the front of the cover a piece of leather, seemed so as to form aslee ve, is provided. These sleeves are of such a size as to allow of the members of the V-shaped fastener passing through them upward upon each side of the horses neck, so that the angle of the V will be beneath the throat andagainst the chest of the horse. After the fastening device has thus been inserted it is secured in its position by means of a strap that passes over the top front edge of the cover and is provided on each of its ends with spring-hooks that fasten onto the eyes of the device.

0 is the fastening device,which is composed of a rod of metal bent round'intoV shape with the top ends of the members of the V turned parallel to each other, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings, and bent backward from the bottom portion, as shown in Fig. 2.

The cover is placed upon the animal in the ordinary manner, and the fastening device has its two members passed upward through the sleeves B, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. It is then secured in this position by means of the strap D, the two ends of which are fastened to loops 0, formed in the extremities of the fasteners O. The means of fastening the strap may be varied at will, that shown in the drawings being by means of spring-hooks 11, passing into the loops 0. In order to retain the strap D in its proper position, keepers E are placed upon the front edge of the cover, through which the strap is passed.

The sleeves B are provided with slots 12, made at intervals throughout their lengths, into any one of which the ends of the fastener C may be passed, so as to go through the sleeve. By these means the fastener may be made to adapt itself to difierentsized animals at will. The strap D may also be adjusted in length to attain the same purpose.

The sleeves B instead of being on the outside of the cover may be made upon the inside of the cover or upon any other suitable position.

It will thus be seen that when in position upon the animal the fastening device 0 by reason of its particular form will conform to the shape of the shoulders and neck of the animal and will act as a weight to keep the front of the cover in position and at the same time allow of perfect freedom of movement of the animals neck and shoulders.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A fastening device for securing the fronts of animal-covers, such device consisting of a bar of metal or the like, bent into V form with its two ends turned parallel and bent backward at an angle to the bottom portion, and a cover provided with sleeves through which the respective members of the fastener are adapted to be passed, and means 5 for securing the fastener in such position, as herein set forth.
