PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY A. KERSLAKE, OF'AUBURN, NEW YORK.
WR.ENCH. A
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 746,339,.dated December 8, 1903.
Application filed January 21, 1903. Serial No. 140,045 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY A. KERsLAKE, a,v
citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Auburn, county of Cayuga, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wrenches, of which the fol of piping in a ready and convenient manner,
and thus held in the desired position or adj ustment while being operated.
I accomplish the objects above mentioned by novel features of construction, which will be presently described in detail, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in
which- Figure 1 is a side View of the wrench, portions of which are represented as broken away in order to afford a clear conceptionof the improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical top side view of the wrench, in which portions thereof are shown broken away for the same purpose as in Fig. 1.
Similar figures of reference refer to similar parts in the drawings.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the handle 1 of the wrench is provided with a bifurcated end 2, in which is pivoted the inner jaw 3 bya bolt. 4. At the bifurcated end 2 of said handle l is formed a cavity 5, which is reduced in size as it is prolonged'in said handle 1, affording a shoulder 6, said reduction of the cavity 5 ending in a slot 7, which is turned to the outer side of the handle 1 In the cavity 5 is carried a spiral spring 8, the handle end of which rests against a shoulder 6 of the cavity 5, as shown. A catch-bolt 9 is provided having a rest or stop 10 and-a stem 11, around which latter the spiral spring 8 is coiled. The end of the stem 11 is screwed into an angle-piece 12, into which is screwed at right angles thereto Within the slot 7 the stem 13, which is provided at its outer end with a button 14, as plainly shown in Fig. 2.
The inner jaw 3 is pivoted at its handle side between the bifurcations 2 of the'handle 1 by the bolt 4, as already mentioned. At this pivot-point the portion of the said inner jaw 3 which is pivoted between the said bifurcations 2 is provided with a series of notches 14,
7 into which passes the catch-bolt 9 when the wrench is being operated. The outer end of said inner jaw 3 is of a curved form and is provided with serrations 15 for catching on the pipe or coupling, as plainly seen in Fig. 1. The upper side of the jaw 3 is extended into the side supports 16 16 16 16, between which and lengthwise of the said jaw 3 is formed the rest or seat 17, on which the shank 18 of the outer jaw 19 rests and moves. The
said rest or seat 17 is turned downwardly near the serrated end of the inner jaw 3, as indicated by the dotted lines at 17.
At the top ends of the side supports l6 16 16 16 of the inner jaw 3 and between the same preferably is secured the j aw-latch piece 20, which is provided with the cavity 21 and the slot 22. To the under side of thesaid jawlatch piece is pivoted at 23'the jaw-latch 24, provided with the broad serrated end 25 and the operating-handle 26. A- spring 27 is interposed between the upper side of the jawlatch 24 and the under side of the jaw-latch piece 20, which said spring 27 rests in the cavity 21 of the said jaw-latch piece 20, as clearly seen in F.ig. 1.
The outer end of the outer jaw 19 is turned end 25 of the jaw-latch 24 catches as the shank.
of the outer jaw is passed backward and forward in its assigned position.
From the above'detailed description of the several parts entering into my improvement it will be seen that when it is desired touse I oo the wrench in confined spaces, like corners or near the flooring or walls, &c., the handle through its being pivoted to the inner jaw of the Wrench, as shown, may be turned side- Wise or laterally in opposing directions and at any desired angle and there locked by means of the catch-bolt carried in and operated at the side of the said handle catching in the notches of that part of the inner jaw which is pivoted between the bifurcations of the handle. This operation of the several parts just explained I have shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
To accommodate the wrench at the same time to varying sizes of pipings, couplings, &c., it will be seen it is only necessary to slide the upper jaw on its seat, the latch being raised, between its side supports and there secure it in position by means of the "latch carried above it entering the notches of its upper notched side, which operation is illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
Having thus described the several parts of my improvements and the operation of the same, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a wrench a bifurcated handle having a cavity provided with a catch-bolt and spring a slot and operating-button combined with an inner jaw having an extension provided with notches pivoted between said bifurcations of said handle, an outerserrated face, upwardlyextended supports or sides carrying a jawlatch piece provided with a cavity having a spring, a latch pivoted thereto provided with notches and an operating-handle, and a seat between said upwardly-extended supports or sides substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein describedand shown.
2. In awrench a bifurcated handle having a cavity provided with a catch-bolt and spring, a slot and operating-button, and an inner jaw having an extension provided with notches pivoted between said bifurcations of said handle, an outer serrated face, upwardly-extended supports or sides carrying a jaw-latch piece provided with a cavity having a sprin a latch pivoted thereto provided with notches and an operating-handle, and a seat between said upwardly extended supports or sides, combined with an outer jaw having a curved end provided with serrations on its inner side and a shank carried on said seat between said upwardly-extended supports or sides and having notches on its upper side substantially constructed in the ma'nner and for the pur pose herein described and shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, at Auburn, county of Cayuga, State of New York, this 17th day of January, A.
HARRY A. KERSLAKE.
