PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN DANIEL CAMPBELL, OF COMANCHE, TEXAS.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,015, dated December 8, 1903.
Application filed March 25, 1903. Serial No. 149.523. (No model.)
To t/ whom, t may cm1/cern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN DANIEL CAMP- BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Comanche, in the county of Comanche and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in plows, and has for its object to improve the construction of plows and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient one which will be light, strong, and durable and which will be adapted to receive avariet-y of plowshares, blades, shovels, and similar cultivating devices to enable a single plow to be employed for a variety of purposes and to obviate the necessity of employing more than one plow for accomplishing the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a plow of this character in which the landside will be capable of adjustment to arrange it either parallel with the plow-beam or at an angle to the same, whereby the plow is adapted to be set to run either shallow or deep, according to the character of the work to be performed.
The invention consists of the construction and novel arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown, and particularlypointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings forming part of this speciication, and in which like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plow constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a similar view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail horizontal sectional view illustrating the manner of securing the plowshare to the lower arm or standard of the operating-lever. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the toothed segment or ratchet.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a plow-beam which may he of any desired construction and which is preferably constructed of wood, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The plow-beam is provided at its lower face with a depending bracket or support 2,
having an eye 3 and secured to the plowbeam by bolts 4, which are also employed for fastening a toothed segment or ratchet 5 to the upper face of the plow-beam. The ratchet or segment, which is used as hereinafter eX- plained, may be of any desired construction, and the bolts, which are arranged vertically, extend entirely through the plow-beam and through suitable perforations of the ends of the bracket or hanger 2 and the ends of the ratchet or segment.
The eye or perforation 3 of the hanger or bracket receives a transverse pivot-bolt 6, which fulcrums an operating-lever? on the plow-beam. Theoperating-leveriscomposed of two sides or bars 8 and 9, spaced apart to receive a plow-beam, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.` The bar or side 9 preferably terminates short of the upper end of the other side or bar, 8, and it extends to the top of the toothed segment or ratchet, its upper end 10 being bent inward over the saine and fitted against the said side or bar 8. The upper portion of the side or bar 9 is secured to the side or bar 8 by means of a bolt 11, which extends through the opening of the toothed segment or ratchet, which is located between the bolt 11 and the inwardly-bent end 10, as shown.
The lower arm of the lever constitutes the plow-standard and is adapted to receive a plowshare 12, which is secured to the lever by means of a clamping-bolt 13, a clampingplate 14 being arranged on the bolt for engaging the rear edges of the sides or bars 8 and 9. Instead of employing the form of plowshare illustrated in the accompanying drawings any other form of cultivator shovel,b1ade, or sweep may be employed for enabling the plow to be used for performing the particular character of Work desired. By this construction the plow may be employed for a large variety of purposes by simply changing the plowshare or blade.
The lower ends of the sides. or bars of the operating-lever receive the front end of alandside or bar 16, which forms the sole of the plow, and the rear portion of the landside or bar is adjustably connected with the plowbeam by means of toggle connection composed of upper and lower links 17 and 18 and adapt- IOO , a pivot 22.
ed t'o permit the said landside or bar to be arranged either parallel with the plow-beam or at an angle thereto to cause the plow to run either shallow or deep, as desired. The links are preferably arranged in pairs, as shown in Fig. 3, the upper ends of the upper links being pivoted to an eye of the plow-beam and the lower end of the lower links being pivoted by a bolt 19 to an eye 20 of the landside or bottom bar 16. The eye of the plow-beam may consist of an eyebolt 21 or be constructed in any other desired manner, and it receives The adjacent ends of the upper and lower links are connected, by a bolt 23, with the rear end of a longitudinal connecting-rod, which has its front end pivoted between the sides 8 and 9 of the operating-lever at a point between the ends of the lower arms of the latter. By adjusting the lever the toggle connection is adapted to be straightened out for arranging the landside or bottom bar parallel with the plow-beam, or the links maybe set at an angle to each other to arrange the bottom bar or landside at an angle to the plow-beam. By these means the plow may be caused to run either shallow or deep, as desired.
The upper or operating arm of the lever is provided with a dog or detent 25, operating in a guide 26 and arranged to engage the toothed segment or ratchet. The dog or detent is connected with a latch-lever 27 by a rod 28, and it may be spring-actuated, if desired. The toothed segment or ratchet'is engaged by the dog or detent, whereby the plow is locked at the desired adjustment.
What I claim is-- 1. In a plow, the combination of a plowbeam, of a bottom bar, a standard pivotally connecting the front portion of the latter with the plow-beam, a toggle connection between the plow-beam and the rear portion of the bottom bar,and means for adjusting the parts, substantially as described.
2. In a plow, the combination with a plowbeam, of an oscillatory standard, pivotally connected with the plow-beam and extended above the same to form a hand-operated lever for adjusting the plow, a bottom bar, pivoted at its front portion to the standard, and an adjustable connection pivoted to the rear portion of the bottom bar and to the plowbeam, and connected with and operated by the standard, substantially as described.
3. In a plow, the combination of a plowbeam, a lever fulcrumed thereon and extending above and below the same, a bottom bar pivoted to the lower arm of the lever, a toggle connection between the rear portion and bottom bar and the plow-beam, a rod extending from the toggle connection to the lever, and means for securing the parts in their adjustment, substantially as described.
4. In a plow, the combination of a plowbeam, a lever fnlcrumed on the plow-beam and composed of two sides embracing the same and extending above and below the beam, a segment mounted on the beam between the sides of the lever, a locking device carried by the lever for engaging the same, a plowshare carried by the lower portion of the lever, a bottom bar pivoted to the lower end of the lever, a toggle connection between the rear portion of the bottom bar and the plowbeam, and a rod extending from the toggle connection to the lever, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN DANIEL CAMPBELL.
