$1ECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 744,934, dated November 2st, 1903.
Application filed March 25, 1903. Serial No. 149,485. (No model.)
. ments which are respectively adaptedto the several uses referred to.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the device, the parts being shown as extended. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan View thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device, the parts being closed; and Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view thereof.
Reference characters are relatively alike in all the figures.
My improved combination implement for desk use comprises a knife-blade 1, the outer end portion 1 thereof being properly formed to be operated as an eraser. The blade 1 is integral with a shank 2, by means of which the former may be attached to a handle 3, of which a part 3, preferably adjacent to the end which is opposite the blade 1, is suitably formed and polished to be operated as a burnisher. A paper-guide 4 is also attached to the handle 3 and is preferably made of one piece of metal of suitable form, which is bifurcated, as shown, thus forming two side pieces 4t 4', which lie parallelly of the blade 1, one on each side of the latter. Each side piece 4: is so formed near thejunction thereof with the handle 3 that the space between the former and the blade 1 is considerably enlarged at the point referred to relatively of the remainder of said space, a paper-clearing space 5 being thus formed for a purpose hereinafter related. Preferably the free ends of the side pieces l are curved outwardly, as at 6 6, in order to guide an edge of an envelop or other folded sheet of paper between said side pieces.
The handle 3 is recessed, as at 5 5, to permit the curved ends 6 of the paper-guide to lie partly within the handle 3 when the deiug space 5.
vice is closed. The recesses 5 and the curved ends 6 are of such relative proportions that the latter are resiliently compressed to some extent within the former.
The operations and advantages of my improved combination implement for desk use will be readily understood and appreciated by the users thereof. With the paper-guide 4: closed into the handle 3 the device may be used as a penknife. \Vith the paper-guide 4 opened the device may be used as an envelopopener or to cut the folded edges of other papers, in which use the curved ends 6 6 readily guide the folded edge of paper into the paperguide 4 and properly position said edge to be engaged and cut by the knife 1. Should small portions of the paper become detached in the process of cutting, said portions will pass out of the implement at the paper-clear- The devicemay be used as an eraser or as a burnisher at any time whether the paper-guide 4 be opened or closed.
When the paper-guide iis closed, the curved ends 6 thereof engage the side walls of the re cesses 5 and maintain the guides in its closed position.
I claim as new and as my invention-- 1. A combination implement for desk use and comprising a handle; a blade fixed therein and projecting therefrom; and a bifurcated paper-guide attached to the handle and extending on both sides of the blade; the side pieces of said guide being so formed as to have a paper-clearing space between them.
2. A combination implement for desk use, and comprising a handle; a blade fixed therein and projecting therefrom; and a bifurcated paper-guide attached to the handle and extending on both sides of the blade; the side pieces of said guide being outwardly curved at their free ends; and said guides being so formed as to have a paper-clearing space be tween them.
3. A combination implement for desk use, and comprising a handle; a blade fixed therein and projecting therefrom; and a bifurcated paper-guide hinged to the handle and extensible therefrom.
4:. A combination impleinentfor desk use, and comprising a handle; a blade fixed therein and projecting therefrom; and a bifurcated papenguide attached to the handle and extending on both sides of the blade; the side pieces of said guide being outwardly curved at their free ends.
5. A combination implement for desk use, and comprising a blade; a bifurcated paperguide which extends parallelly of the blade and has its free ends curved outwardly; a handle to which the blade and paper-guide are attached and into which the paper-guide Io' maybe partially closed; theoutwardly-curved ends of the paper-guide being resiliently engageable with the walls of recesses which are formed in the handle.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 15 two subscribing Witnesses.
