#OQO- Be it known that I, DANIEL S. BEAR, of Toledo, in the countyot Tama, and State of Iowahave invented a new and improvedeedive, and that the following description, taken in connection with `the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of' the same, wherein `I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvements, bywhich my invention may be` distinguished from all others ci' a similar class, together with such parts as I claim, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent.`

This-- invention consists in construeting'a bee-,hive in two parts, and in such a manner that said parts may be readilyseparated whenever required, and the filled half of an occupied hive united to the empty halt' ofran unoccupied hive, and colonies of bees multipliedwithout the natural process of swarming, and therefore without the trouble, risk, and annoyance of hiving. i Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. t i i A represents the base of the hive, :which is composed of two platforms, a a, slightly inclined from arborizontal plane, the elevated ends abutting against each other,and forming the cent-re of the bottom of the hive. The platforms a a are secured to two parallel sleepers, b b, the latter projecting a trifle beyond the sides of the platforms, and forming rests or supports fortwo boxes, B B, which constitute the body of the hive.` These `two boxes B B are oi'` equal dimensions, and their top and inner ends are formed of laths, c, the spaces between which are suiiiciently wide to allow the bees to pass through. At the lower parts of the outer ends ofthe boxes B B` are the bee-entrances, d, (see fig. 1,) and the boxes are secured in contact at `their inner adjoining ends byany suitable fastenings, e. C represents a cap or box, which rests upon the two boxes B B, and contains the spare-honey boxes D, the latter resting on honey-boards E, Yon the tops of the boxes B B, which honey-boards are slotted, as shown at f, to allow the bees to pass through them. i p

There is nothing essentially new in the cap, or spare-honey boxes contained therein, the novelty consisting n the two boxes B B of the hive. v

When a hive becomes filled, the two boxes B B are separated, `and a filled box,-B, connected to au'empty one; two partially-filled hives are therehycbtainled from a filled one, and the empty parts or boxes of the partially-filled hives soon become wholly; filled, as the beeseommence to worlr in them at once. The arrangement ofthe boxes 'B B admitsoi their being readily separated, without disturbing and exasperating the bees.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I. The open-bottomed boxes B B, constrcted as described, having their inner and upper sidesv formed of slats e c, said boxes fitting over the doubf inclined bottom A, and adapted to be removed separately, from opposite sides of the hive, as herein described, for th'e purpose specified. l

2. The boxes B-B, constructed and operating as described, in combination with the double inclined bottom A, slotted honey-board E, cap C, and surplus-honey boxes when the sides of said boxes B B are adapted to fit over the edges of the inclined bottom upon the projecting sleepers b, as herein described, for the purpose specified.
