SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters'PatentNo. 744,446, dated November 17, 1903.

To all whom it may concern; I
Be it known that I,MILTON WALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cam bridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trolley Guides, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a device to guide a trolley for electric rail: ways as the same is passing a switch or is passing a switch-plate or any plate used for connecting the ends of two portions of trolleywire wherein the trolley is for a short distance left without a guide to prevent lateral movement thereof.
The invention consists, in a device of the character described,of a trolley-frog,a trolleywire fast thereto, and a guide-track located beneath said trolley-wire and adapted to guide the trolley as it is passing from one trolleytrack to another through a space between the adjacent ends of said trolley-tracks.
The invention again consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification, and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 isa top plan of a trolley frog and wires with my im* proved auxiliary guide-track attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the parts illustrated in Fig. 1 with a trolley and guideroll constructed in accordance with my invention in connection therewith. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.

In the drawings, 8 is a trolley-frog plate, 9 the main trolley-wire, and 10 a branch trolleywire fastened to the upper side of said plate in a m anner well known to those skilled in the art. Beneath the main trolley-wire 9 and integral with the frog-plate 8 are downwardly-projectingtrolley-tracks 11 12 with a space 13between their adjacent ends. A trolley 14 is supported upona troll ey-pole 15 and is arranged to rotate upon a pin 16 in amanner well known to those skilled in the art. A guide-roll19 is journaled to rotate upon a stud 20, fast to an arm 17, pivoted at 18 to the trolley-pole 15, said arm being normally held against the stop-pin 24 by a torsional spiral spring 25, one end of Serial No.150.94.7. (No model.)

A guide-track plate 21 is fastened by screws 22 22 to the trolley-frog plate 8 and projects downwardly from one side thereof. Upon the under side of said guide-track plate is a guide track 23, fast to or integral with said guide track plate. The guide-track 23 extends longitudinally of the frog plate 8 be neath the trolley-tracks and across the space 13 between the adjacent ends of said trolleytracks and is located beneath the main trolley-wire 9 and at one side of and parallel to a vertical median plane extending longitudinally of said main trolley-wire.
The operation of the device hereinbefore specifically described is as follows: Assuming the car to be moving in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 2, the guide-roll 19 is in advanceof the trolley 14 and will engage the right-hand end of the guide-track 23 beforethe trolley 14 leaves the main trolley-wire 9, so that as the trolley 14 passes under the track 11 the guide-roll 19 willbe in contact with the guide-track 23, and as the trolley is passing from the track 11 to the track 12, during which time it is for a short space without positive guide as ordinarily used, the guide-roll 19 will positively guide said trolley and prevent the same from accidentally leaving its proper course, so that it will be sure to engage with the trolley-track 12 after it has passed the space 13.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire by Letters Patent to se cure, is
1. In a device of the character described, a trolley, a support therefor, a guide-roll supported upon said trolley-support in advance of said trolley, a trolley-frog, a "trolley-wire fast thereto, and a guide-track located beneath said trolleywire and adapted to engage said guide-roll.
2. In a device of the character described, a trolley-frog, a trolley-wire fast thereto, and a guide-track located beneath said trolley-wire at one side of a vertical median plane extending longitudinally of said trolley-wire.
3. In a device of the character described, a trolley-frog, a trolley-wire fast thereto, a
guide-track plate fast to said frog and extend-V a trolley-wire fast thereto, and a guide-track located beneath said trolley-wire and adapted to engage said guide-roll.
6. In a device of the character described, a trolley, a trolley-pole, an arm pivoted to said trolley-pole, a guide-roll journaled upon said arm in advance of said trolley, a trolley-frog,
a trolley-wire fast thereto, a guide-track located beneath said trolley-wire and adapted to engage said guide-roll, and a spring adapted to hold said guide-roll in engagement with said guide-track.
