To a/ZZ whom it may concern.- Y ,Y Be it known that I, PAUL DE HEMPTINNE,'=a subject of the King of `Belgium, residing at Ghent, Kingdom of Belgium', have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Casting `Hollow Metal Bodies,
fully described and represented in the fol-V lowing specication and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention relates to apparatus for castin ghollow ingots, particularly of steel or other metals. Attempts have' been made heretofore by others to produce an apparatus for castingsuch ingots bythe use ofa rotating mold; but such attempts have not to my knowledge been successful. The failureV of such attempts has been largely .if not en` tirely, due to the rapid cooling of the molten metal before a proper distribution thereof in the mold-has been eiected and to vibrations.

As a full understanding of the invention can best be given by a detailed description of a construction embodying the features of the invention vin the preferred form, such a description will now be given in connection with the accompanying drawings, showing such an apparatus. v

The twostationary bearing-rolls arepreferably arranged substantially in the same horizontal plane and serve assupportingrolls for the mold,
. and the movable bearing-roll is preferably carried by a bracket or arm 19, pivotedat one side of the mold and `extending over the mold and pressed downward by means'of a spring 20, which; is held under adjustable tension by means of' a screw-,collar 21 on an upwardly-.projecting pivoted rod 22. The arm 19 and rod 22 are or may be mounted on a frame 23, which supports the two stationary bearing-rolls. The bearing-rolls 18 are preferably mounted on antifriction ballbearings, which may be of any suitable construction or asfshown in Fig. 3.
The molten metalis introducedinto ther mold through a nozzle'2'i5, which is mounted tofprojec't through the opening 14 and 'into the mold, extending with its end some distance inside the `innerface of the cap 13.
The nozzle 25 is preferably 'slightly inclined and tapered. and connects with a hopper or chamber 26, into which the metal is poured. AThe opening14 should be of such 'size with the mold in the rapid relation to the nozzle as to leave anairpassage around the nozzle for permittin g air to be drawninto the mold with the molten metal, such air escaping through the hollow shaft 12 and aiding by its-movementthrough distribution of the molten metal. l
In the operation of is first started rotatingat-a high rate of speed which should Abe not less than six hundred to seven hundred andfty revolutions per minute. The molten metal is then introduced into the mold through the nozzle 25. As the metal enters the'mold it will be thrown against thesides of the, mold, and aided by the entrance of air through the opening 14 around the' nozzle and thel exit of air through the hollow shaft 12'the metal will advance rapidly in the mold in a` spiral path to uform a body having an'outside shape corresponding to the inner surfaceiof the mold andhaving a central longitudinal opening therethrough.
The size of the nozzle should be varied acv cording tothe size of fthe ingots to be cast and it should extend more or less into the mold. The size of the opening 14 also should be varied according to the size of the nozzle and the speed of entrance of the metal and rotation of the mold.

3. In an apparatus for casting hollow ingots, the combination of a horizontally-arranged mold having one end partially closed the apparatus the mold maori by a cap having a central opening, a universal bearing in which the opposite end of the mold is self-adjustably journaled, an antomatically-expansible bearing having an odd number of bearing members for engaging and supporting the-body of the mold at a point between the endsthereof whereby the mold is capable of being` rotated at great speed zle and the mold being provided at its opposite end with an air-outlet, and means for rotating the mold, substantially as described.
4. In anapparatus for casting hollow in- -gots, the combination ofa horizontally-arranged mold'having a central opening in one end, a bearing in which the other end of the mold is self-adjustably journaled, a bearing supporting the body of the mold` between the ends thereof, having three members and means permitting one of said members to move away from the other two against yielding. tension whereby the bearing willl automatically accommodate itself to the expansion and contraction of the mold, a nozzle vfor introducing molten metal through the central opening inthe end of the mold, and means for rotating the mold, substantially as described. l
5. In an apparatusI for casting hollow inlranged mold having a central opening in one end, a bearing in which the other end of the mold is self-adjustably journaled, a bearing from the pair of rolls against yielding tension whereby the bearing will automatically ac- -molten metal through the central opening in the end'of the mold, and means for rotating the mold, substantially as described.
