SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 742,954, dated November 3, 1903.
Application filed March 6, 1903.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES ANDERSON, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Purifyin g Apparatus, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to an apparatus f0 use in connection with exhaust-steam and a surface condenser for preventing the pitting of the condenser circulating-tubes and for purifying the water condensed from the exhaust-steam.
In the use of surface condensers the pitting of the circulating-tubes'is due generally to the action of acids liberated from inferior oils entrained in the exhaust-steam and the deteriorating effect of the condensed water, which cause the tubes to leak and the injection-water to enter and saturate the water of condensation with salt or other objectionable substance.
This invention consists, primarily, in interposing a chamber between the exhauststeam passage and the condenser and providing a communicating auxiliary water-supply containing purifying ingredients, whereby the water of condensation is treated previous to its contact with the circulating-tubes of I the condenser. In addition to this other expedients may be added, such as oil separators or filters, to render the water of condensation practically free from impurities previous to its return as feed-water to the steamgenerator. In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figures 1 and 2 represent a steam-motor, with an exhaustchamber 8 and surface condenser 9 connected therewith, to which are respectively connected an auxiliary water-supply reservoir 1 and a solution-tank ot, the condenser communicating with an air-pump c, that discharges into a hot-well 10, which serves as an oil-separator. From the hot-well 10 a centrifugal pump 11 conveys the water of condensation to a filter-tank 12, from which, through the connection 01, it is used to feed the steamgenerator.

with the filter-outlet (I may be arranged to pass within the steam-exhaust chamber 8 in the form of a return-bend, as shown at h, for augmenting the temperature of the feed. The water-supply reservoir 1 is connected with a source of watersupply by means of the pipe 2, which extends to the height of the level in the reservoir. A valve 3 and float are attached to the end of the pipe, and the level of the water is thereby regulated.
at represents a chamber or tank in which a purifying material, such as caustic soda or other known purifying substance or compound, is placed. This chamber is connected with a pump 4, that delivers its contents through the delivery-pipe 3 into the reservoir 1 and wherein it mixes with the water that is carried to the exhauststeam chamber 8 through the pipe 5, a valve 7 being connected therewith to regulate the flow. The delivery-pipe 5 is provided at the end entering the chamber 8 with a rose-head 6, which sprays the solution into the exhaust-steam previous to its entrance to the condenser 9.
From the condenser the condensed water and air is drawn out by means of the usual air-pump c, which delivers into a hot-well 10. From this hot-well the entrained oil will float to the surface and may be readily removed by various known ways, or the hot-well may be constructed like any of the known types of separators to serve the purpose. From the hot-well 10 a centrifugal pump 11 conveys the water, preferably from the lower part of the well, as shown, to a filtering-tank 12 and from there through the pipe at it is conveyed for use to any desired place.
The means for separating and filtering shown are merely added to illustrate the complete method of operation of the invention and are not separately claimed herein.
With my invention the use of compounds in the generators is avoided and the efficiency increased, as no solids remain in the feed-water, no loss is sustained by blowing 05, nor the formation of scale promoted.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
