FRANCIS H.` BROWN, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
A Letters .Patent No. 74,294, dated February 11, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN NECK-TIEHOLDERS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS II. BROWN, of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and improved Oravat-Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled iinthe art to mak-e and use the same, reference being hadrto the accompanying drawings, forming partiof this specification.
Figures 1, 2, and 3 represent side views of my improved omvat-holder, showing various modications of the same.' i
' Figure4 is a perspective view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondingparts.
.This invention relates to a. new device for holding down neck-ties and cra-vats on gentlemens standing collarsfits object being to prevent the cravat'from slipping over the upper edge of the collar.
It has heretofore been a great inconvenience, that neck-ties and cravats could not be prevented from slipping off standing collars, and from thus becoming disarranged, unless they were pinned to the collars, whereby the cravats as well as the collars were injfured.
My invention consists in the use of a metallic hook, which is either provided with a button, o'r which can be secured to a. button, so that it can be attached to the button at the back of the neck-band of the shirt, or fitted in the button-hole provided in the said neck-band. The hook tits over the cravat, and efectua-lly prevents it from slipping oi' the collar. l i
A represents'a'hook, made of sheet metal, wire, or-pny other suitable material. The inner arm a of this hook is either provided with a stud, b, as in iig. 1, whereby the device can be fitted in the button-hole arranged through the back of the' necleband e of the shirt, and through the' standing collar B, or through the latter only if desired; or the' arm a is slotted, as in figs. 2 and 3, so that it can be ltted to a stud, e, arrirnged through the aforesaid button-holes, s in fig. 3, or to a button,f, arranged in place of the button-hole on the neck-band c,
as in iig. 2, or on the collar.` In case the stud is not secured to the hook, the back arm a of the hook should Ybe split, as in fig. 4, so as to form one or more recesses, into whichvthe shank of the'stnd e or buttonfis fitted.
The upper andilower ends o'f such recesses are closcd'by the natural springot` the two parts of the arm a, as will be easily understood from ng. 4. V
By arranging two or more such recesses, the device can be set higher or lower en the collar, as may be desired. .When the hook A is thus secured to the neck-band and collar, the cravat g is fitted between the inner arm a and the outer arm la of the hook, and its upper edge thus strikes against the junction of' the arms of the hook, and it is thus prevented from slipping off over the upper edge of the collar. Instead of arranging this hook at the back of the neck-band, it may be arranged at the side, or two or more may be applied at-once, as may b e desired. The hook A may also be used for attaching cravats to front shirt-buttons.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a. new article of manufacture, a gentlemans neck-tie h older A,'constructed substantially as described, and so arranged that it can be attached to the neck-band or collar of the shirt, either by'means of a button secured to the hook itself, or forming the hook without a button, and attaching it to a stud or button ailxed to the c ollar or neck-bandl of the shirt, or to the removable collar, a.s herein shown and described.V
FRANCIS H. BROWN.
