Description

@nimh af @anni @ffice Letters Patent No. 74,204, dated February 11, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-GAUGES.
litige .estante referat tu in tigen etttts @wat ma mating gaat of tige sume. A
TO- ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Bo it known that-1, CLARENCE DELAFIELD, of Factoryville, county of Richmond, inthe Stato of New York, have invented a certain new and improved Water-Gauge for Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same,ret`erence being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section, showing the invention as applied to a boiler; and
Figures 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 are detailed pats of the same, which will be hereinafter referred to as occasion may require. n
The following description will enable any ono skilledin the arts to which my invention apport-eins to make and use the same.
In the drawing, m represents the boiler-front, in which a tube, a, is screwed. The front end ot' this tube is funnel-shaped or conical in the inside, and in the rear end thereof there is formed a spherical valvc-seat, in which the valve b is accurately fitted. The stem upon which this valve is made reaches from the valve forward through the tube, and connects to a steam-whistle, fa, in front of the boiler, and said stem also extends back from said seat, and connects to a float, R, which rises and falls with the water in thc boiler. I
In'the rear end of the tube c there is a small ho1e,V, made, and in the valve Z1 there is also a small hole made, 'which extends all the way through that part of the valve-stein which reaches forward fromthe valve and connects to the whistle. Now, this hole V, in the tube, and the corresponding hole in the valve-seat, are so made and arranged with reference to each other as to match, that is, come directly opposite each other, when the water sinks so low as to endanger the boiler, whereupon the steam will issue through these holes and blow the whistle a; butto show the height of` the water in the boiler, at all times, the front cnil of the .valve-stem is connected to a dial-joint, y, by means of a small rod,f, and 4a crank,.z', as shown more fully in fig. 8, this dial-joint swinging on a pivot in the centre of the dial-plate c e, which dial-plate is secured by a pair of studs, X X, on the front end of the tube c, as shown in g. 3, an oblong hole being made in said plate to allow the end, k, of the valvestem to rise and fall with the float in the boiler.v
The front of the dial-plate is shown in tig.V 6, which also shows thc register-marks, by which the exact height of water in the boiler is indicated.
Having new described the nature and extent of my invention` claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The use of a funnel-shaped tube, fitted with aV valve, and combined with the boiler-shell, substantially as deseribed,by which the escape ofthe stcamraround the valve-stem is stopped,'and the motion of the float and dial-point provided for.
2. The whistle a, in combination withthe valve-stem, when said valve-stem is made with a hole through the same, leading from and matching with a hole in the valve-seat, and discharging in the whistle, substantially as described, by which the escape of steam is regulated, and made to sound an alarm at a certain stage of therwater.
