FIREPLACE AND GRATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,192, dated October 13, 1903.
' I Application filed March 17,1903. Serial No. 148,196. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern/.- I
Be it known that I, MARY E. TRAVIS, acitizen ofthe United States, residingatEvergreen, in the county of Conecuh and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireplaces and Grates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, whichform a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in combined open fireplaces and grates; and it consists in the provision of a device of this nature adapted to be seated in a fireplace-recess and so constructed that it may be readily adjusted for use either as a grate or fireplace-casing; and it consists, further, in the provision of sides and bottom of the casing, which are made of suitable plate-iron, the inner walls of which are provided with projections or ribs adapted to support a grate-bar having a flanged edge, which is notched and adapted to be held in place by cut-away or shouldered portions in the edges of the sides, while a removable and angled back is adapted to rest upon the tops of the sides and to be held by ribs, with a suitable space intervening between the same and the rear wall of the casing.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which Figure l is a perspective view of the device adjusted for use as a grate. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the apparatus adjusted for use as an open fireplace. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the grate. Fig. 4 is a detail view of a perforated metallic partition.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A represents a casing the side walls of which are made of thick iron, either cast or plate, and B designates the bottom, which has two arms 13 projecting from the rear end thereof and passing through apertures in the rear wall of the casing. The front edge of said bottom has a flange E the ends of which project beyond the edges of the sides of the casing, and upon the inner face of each side are ribs 0, which are adapted to support a grate D, which is made substantially of the shape of the bottom, having three arms D integral with the notched portions, thus securely holding the sides from bulging or moving outward. Ribs H are formed vertically on the side walls of the casing, and a removable partition K,preferably perforated and bent at right angles, is provided, which has cut-away portions beneath the angled part of said partition, forming shoulders K. The horizontally-disposed portion of said partition which projects over the tops of the sides is adapted to rest upon the same, while the rear edge of said horizontally-disposed portion rests upon the top of the back of. the casing.
When the device is adjusted for use as a grate-burner, it appears as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings; but when an open fireplace is wished the grate D and the perforated partition may be removed, thus adapting the device for use as an open fireplace having sides, back, and bottom of suitable thick metal taking the place of fire-brick.
A cross-piece N, having notches N at opposite ends, is provided and connects the upper edges of the sides of the casing, said notches being adapted to engage notches M in the front edges of the sides, while the ends of the strip N project beyond the sides and aflord means for supporting any masonry which may be positioned over the fireplacecasing.
While I have shown a particular construccasing, it will be understood that I may make alterations in the detailed construction of the same without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An improvement in fireplaces comprising metallic sides and apertured back, said sides having ribs on their inner faces, a movable fianged grate having arms projecting from the rear end thereof adapted to engage the apertures in said back, the flange of said grate projecting beyond said sides, and having recessed portions designed to engage under shoulders formed in the edges of the sides, and a partition forming a hot-air chamber, as set forth.
2. An improvement in fireplaces comprising sides with ribs on their inner faces and shouldered edges, a rear wall having apertures therein, a bottom with flanged edge, a flanged grate having arms projecting from the rear edge thereof and adapted to engage said apertures in the rear wall of the casing, said flan ge of the grate projecting beyond the sides of the casing and having notches in its upper edge engaging under said shouldered edges, a perforated angled metallic partition having horizontally-disposed projections resting on the top of the sides of the casing, as set forth.
3. An improvement in fireplaces and grates comprising metallic sides, ribs on their inner faces, a bottom, an apertured rear Wall forming, with said sides and bottom, a casing, a flanged grate adapted to rest upon said ribs and having rearwardly-projecting arms engaging apertures in said rear wall of the easing, the flange of said grate having notches in its upper edge designed to engage under shoulders formed -on the front edges of the sides of the casing, a strip having oppositelydisposed notches engaging the notches in the edges of said sides, and a removable angular partition having a horizontally-disposed part Wider than the vertical portion thereof and designed to rest upon the tops of the sides of said casing, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
MARY E. TRAVIS.
