APPARATUS FOR BLEACHING, etc.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,188, dated October 13, 1903.

To aIZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, FRIEDRICH CARL Tums, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Ohligs,Rhineland, Germany,have invented a certain new and useful Apparatus for Bucking, Steaming, and Bleaching of Fabrics, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is an apparatus in which fabrics may undergo the processes of bucking and steaming under high pressure and in which all parts of the fabric are completely and uniformly treated. This object is attained by the means described in the specification, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying draw ings, in which- Figure l is a transverse sectional view of an apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken upon line a a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken upon line 10 w of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar View taken upon line '0 r) of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail of the indicator-finger.
Referring to the parts, twin boilers A and A are united by a longitudinal passage-way a. Upon the bottom of boiler A are tracks a and a upon which is mounted a car B, supported upon wheels I) and b, which engage the track and which consists of a framework N, which supports a longitudinal rotatory shaft 12 upon which is wound reel 0 of fabric to be treated. Shaft b has at its rear end a clutch 17 which engages a clutch d, secured upon a shaft D, journaled in the rear head of the boiler and carrying upon its end a loose and a fixed pulley d and 61 respectively. The reel of cloth 0 is wound upon the shaft 1) before the car is pushed into the boiler A.- After the car has been pushed into the boiler on the tracks the end of the boiler is hermetically sealed by a door a A longitudinal shaft E is. journaled in the ends of boiler A and extends through the rear end thereof and receives a loose and a fixed pulley e and e, respectively. From reel G the fabric is carried through passageway a. and is fastened upon shaft E'and by means of rotation of the shaft is wound up thereon and after it has reached the desired thickness may be again wound up upon shaft b by shifting the belts on the pulleys d and (Z and e and 6, respectively. Resting on shaft E is a pressure-rod F, journaled in a frame f, to which is attached a vertical. guiderod f, which extends upward through a stuffing-box f upon the top of boiler A, upon which is mounted an indicatorf adjacent to rod f, which carries a finger which indicates the size of the roll of cloth upon shaft. E. Rod f has an adjustable arm j, which may be fixed at the desired height above the rod by means of a set-screw f Vertically above arm f indicator f carries an electrical button f", which when contacted by arm f completes an electrical circuit (not shown) and sounds an alarm. By adjusting arm f the alarm will be sounded when the roll upon shaft E has reached a predetermined size, so that the belts may then be shifted and the fabric rewound upon reel 0.
Boiler A has upon its side a door a, which is hermetically sealed while the process of bucking and steaming is being carried on, but which may be opened for the purpose of winding the fabric off of roll E after the process has been completed.
Centrally beneath boilers A and A is a pump G, into which pipes g and g run from boilers A and A, respectively, and from the opposite end of which pipe g runs to pipes g and g vertically above passage-way a. The opening of pipe 9 is controlled by a cock 9, and the opening of pipe g is controlled by a cock g Pipe g has a series of vertical branch pipes 9 extending down into passageway a. Pipe 9 has a series of branch pipes g extending down into the top of boiler A and a series of branch pipes 9 extending into the top ofboiler A. 7
Situated in pipes gand g are cocks g and g, respectively, and running into the same end of the pump G as pipes g and g is a pipe 9 in which is located a cock 9 The operation of my apparatus is as follows: After the reel of fabric 0 has been fixed upon shaft b the car rolled into the boiler A, the boiler hermetically sealed, the
end of the fabric fastened to shaft E the bucking liquid is introduced into boiler A through g are opened, the rest of the cooks being closed, and the pump G is reciprocated and carries the bucking material from the boilers up through pipe g and branch pipes g down upon the fabric, passing through passage-way a. As the fabric accumulates on shaft E the pressure-rod F is carried upward thereby, and the operation thus continues until the roll upon shaft E has reached the desired size, when arm f will contact the electrical button f and sound an alarm, when the operator will shift the belts upon pulleys d d and e e and rewind the fabric upon the shaft 12 When the fabric has all been wound 0d of shaft E, another electrical alarm will be sounded by an arm f contacting a second electrical button f (shown in Fig. 5) to indicate the fact that the cloth has all been wound 0% of shaft E, when the belts may again be shifted to wind the cloth upon its own shaft E.
The process of winding and rewinding while the bucking material is being sprayed,
upon the cloth by pipes b may be carried on as long as desired. When it has been carried on long enough, the bucking material may be discharged from the pipes at and a through pipes g and 9 by turning the cocks g and g to put pipes 9 and 9 in communication with pipes g and 9. Cook 9 is then opened to supply the pump with clear water, which is then pumped up through pipe g and branch pipes 9 upon the fabric as it passes through passage-way at until the fabric has been thoroughly washed, when door a may be opened and the cloth wound off of shaft E to complete the process of bleaching by sending the cloth through tubs containing acids and chemicals necessary for the purpose. These tubs are not shown in the drawings.
If desired at anytime, cocks g and g may be turned so that the liquid from the pump G instead of passing into the passage-way a through branch pipes g may be sent into the boilers through pipe 9 and pipe g".
It is seen that with an apparatus of my construction the fabric undergoes the process of bucking and steaming at a high'pressure, that every particle of the fabric is thoroughly subjected to the process, and that the apparatus is one convenient of operation.
I have shown my invention in the best form known to me; but it is obvious that many mere mechanical changes might be made without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.
What I claim is 1. In a bucking apparatus the combination of rotatable shafts mounted at a distance apart greater than the diameters of the rolls of rotatable shafts from one to the other of which the fabric to be treated may be reeled, means for actuating the shafts, a boiler inclosing the shaft, pipes for conveying the bucking liquid upon the fabric as it passes from one shaft to the other, a second set of pipes to reconvey the liquid from the boiler back to the first set of pipes, a pump for carrying the fluid through the pipes, pipes lead ing from the bottom of the boilers into the pump, discharge-pipes leading from the lastnamed pipes, cocks in the pipes for placing the boiler in communication with the discharge-pipe or the pump and a fresh-water pipe leading into the pump, substantially as shown and described. 1
3. In a bucking apparatus the combination of twin boilers, a passage-way connnecting the boilers, shafts journaled in the ends of each of the boilers from one to the other of which the fabric to be treated is reeled through the passage-way, means for actuating the shafts, pipes leading into the passageway to convey the bucking liquid upon the fabric as it passes from one shaft to the other, and means for carrying the liquid through the pipes, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a bucking apparatus the combination of twin boilers, a passage-way connecting the boilers, shaftsjournaled in the ends of each of the boilers from one to the other of which the fabric to be treated is reeled through the passage-way, means for actuating the shafts, pipes leading into the passage-Way to convey the bucking liquid upon the fabric as it passes from one shaft to the other, a second set of pipes leading from the bottom of the boilers up into the first set of pipes to reconvey the bucking liquid from the boilers to the pipes, and a pump for carrying the fluid through the pipe, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a bucking apparatus the combination of two rotatable-shafts from one to the other of which the fabric to be treated may be reeled, means for actuating the shafts, the boilers inclosing the shafts, pipes for conveying the bucking liquid upon the fabric as it passes from one shaft to the other, and an indicator mounted upon one of the shafts to indicate the size of the roll thereon at any time, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a bucking apparatus the combination of two rotatable shafts from one to the other of which the fabric to be treated may be reeled, means for actuating the shafts, boilers inclosing the shafts, pipes for conveying the bucking liquid upon the fabric as it passes from one shaft to the other, and an electrical signal to be actuated by the indicator when the roll has reached a predetermined size, substantially as shown and described.
