OFFICE.
UNITED STATES PATENT JOSEPH BLUM, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
OVERFLOW ATTACHMENT FOR SINKS.
SPECIFIGATION forming part Of Letters'Patent NO. 740,737, dated October 6, 1903.
Application filed February 28, 1903. Serial No. 145,494. (Nomodelt) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osEPH BLUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illin0is,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overflow Attachments for Sinks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an overflow attachment for use in connection with a sink.
The object of the invention is to provide a device by the use of which a supply of fresh water may be kept inthe sink at all times.
A further object is to provide a construction that will be out of the way of a person who is using the sink to wash glasses, &c.
A further object is to provide a simple and efiicient device of this kind which may be readily put on or taken ofi when desired and having interchangeable parts which may be replaced when worn.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation showing the invention in use. Fig. 2 is abottom plan view. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. t is a fragmentary view showing the rubber washer removed.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates a sink having a discharge or drain opening 6.
The numeral 7 indicates a plug .or stopper adapted to close the dischargepipe 6. The lower end of the plug has a rubber washer 8, which is securely held in place bysplitting the plug, as at 7, to form spreading-fingers 7'. v The plug has a passage 'i", which connects with the drain-pipe, and to its upper end a rubber tube 9 is attached. This extends upward to a suitable distance from the top of the sink. YVhen the water rises in the sink to the height of the tube 9, it will flow down through it and through the plug into the drain-pipe.
By regulating the amount of water flowing into the sink and leaving it run I am able to keep a fresh supply therein constantly.
The upper end of the tube 9 has a hook 9, by which the device may be hung up when not in use.
The tube and washer. can be readily removed and replaced when worn.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a sink having a dischargeopening, of a tubular plug for said opening, a rubber washer on the plug, spread ing-fingers on the plug for holding the washer, and a tube connected to the plug extending above the same and open at its upper end, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH BLUM.
