WRENCH."
BPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 740,251, dated September 29, 1903.
Application filed June 17,1903I n To ctZZ whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, ERNEST F. DAVIS, a citi# zen of the United States, residing at Noank, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful lowing is a specification. l y
My invention relates to wrenches; and the primary object thereof is to provide a new and useful device of this character capable of having a double adjustment, one a quickr and primary, the other a more accurate andV secondary,to permit of and insure a rigid en-v gagement of the nut by a wrench.
A further object of the invention is to pro-Y vide a wrench which is cheap of construction, durable, efficient, and quick in operation.
The invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of partsy hereinafter fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, inA Which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the sliding jaw andv carriage being in longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof, Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the carriage. Fig. 5V is a similar view of the dog.
Referring to the drawings by numerals of reference, 1 designates 'a shank, preferably rectangular in cross-section and having one end thereof provided with a rigid jaw 2, the opposite end terminating in a handle 3. The upper edge of the 'shank is provided for a portion of its length with a rack 4. Mounted upon the sh ank,to have a sliding adjustment thereon, is a movable jaw 5, the same being of the usual form and construction and provided With avertically-disposedear 6, which is formed with a screw-threaded and longitudinally-arranged aperture 7 8 designates a carriage slidingly mounted upon the shank in rear of the sliding jaw, consisting of a rectangular sleeve provided with vertically-disposed iianges 9 and 10, having a seat 12 therebetween. The carriage is conu nected to the sliding jaw to permit of the adj nstment of the latter by means of threaded bolt 13, which is mounted in the aperture and has its opposite end rest-ing upon a recessed bearing 13 in the upper end of the flange 9 SerialNo. 161,899. (No model.)
and formed With a milled head 14, occupying theseat 12, to prevent the longitudinal displacement of the bolt from lthe bearing 18"'. It will be seen that by causing the bolt to rotate by means of the head 14 the jaw 5 will be caused to approach and recede from the jaw 2. The ange 10 has its outer face provided with a duvet-ail groove 15, in which is mounted, to have a vertical movement, a dovetail dog 16, adapted to engage the rack to hold the carriage in its adjusted position. The'dog has the upper end thereof provided with a horizontally-disposed iinger-grip 17, formed integral therewith, and by means of which the dog may be lifted from the rack to vpermit of the carriage being adjusted. To hold the dog normally in engagement with the rack, I provide a leaf-spring 18, which has one end thereof secured to the inner face of the flange 10 and its opposite end carried above the flange and bent to contact with the upper end of the dog. This spring permits the carriage being moved toward the jaw 2 to adjust the sliding jaw, but prevents an unauthorized reverse movement.
The object of providing this double adjustment of the sliding jaw is to permit of a quick primary adjustment to the approximate size of a nut and lthen a secondary and more accurate adjustment, whereby all liability of a proper adjustment not being obtained is ohviated.
The operation of the wrench lnay be ex,- plained in the following manner: The primary adjustmentof the sliding jaw may be obtained by grasping the carriage and sliding it forward upon the shank. After the adjustment if it be found that the nut is not securely gripped theA secondary adjustment may be resorted to, which is obtained by causing the bolt 13 to rotate through medium of the head le.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- Y A wrench comprising a shank having a rack and rigid jaw, a sliding jaw mounted thereon and provided with a screw-threaded apertured ear, a carriage mounted'upon the shank in rear of the sliding jaw, said carriage being provided with flanges providingaseat therebetween and one of which is provided with a recessed bearing'and the other with a dove- IDO tail groove, a screw-threaded bolt adapted to l spring secured to the grooved flange and havhave one of its ends received by the screwing its upper end bent to contact with the threaded aperture and its other end journaled upper end of the dog.
in the recessed bearing, a milled head to one In testimony whereof I afx my signature 5 end of the bolt and adapted to occupy the in presence of two witnesses.
seat to prevent the displacement of the bolt and to permit of its being rotated, a dovetail ERNEST F' DAVIS' dog adapted to be vreceived by said groove Witnesses and provided with a. horizontally-disposed ELIHU H. POTTER,
1e finger-grip formed integral therewith, and a, FRANK A. MCDONALD.
