SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 740,010, dated September 29, 1903. Application filed March 30,1903- $erial No- 150i289. (No model.)
Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Wall-Paper Pasting and Cutting Machine, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to machines for pasting and cutting wall-paper, and has for its objects to produce a device of this character which will be simple of construction, efficientin operation, and one in which the pasting mechanism will be automatically moved to operative position as the paper is drawn through the machine.
To these ends the invention comprises the novel details'of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating my improved device applied to a pasting-table. Figure 2 is a top plan viewof the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, the pasting mechanism being shown out of pasting position. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3, the past ing mechanism being shown in operative position.

a roller 8, sustained by a shaft 9, which extends transversely of the frame and is journaled in bearings in the sides of the frame.
This roller, which sustains theroll of paper 10, is controlled by a suitable braking device consisting of a spring-metal rod,preferably of Wire, bent to form a crown portion 11,
which bears upon the paper, and spring-arms 12, which are engaged with the sides 4 5 of the frame. The paper to be treated is passed from the roller 8 to and around a roller 13,
mounted upon a transverse shaft 14, which is journaled for rotation in suitable hearings in the sides of the frame. These bearings preferably consist of longitudinally-disposed slots 15, which permit of the roller having a movement bodily longitudinally of the machine, andin this connection it is to be understood that any suitable form of hearing which permits ofthis movement of the roller may be employed.
' 16 is a movable table sustained bya transverse shaft 1'7, the ends of which have bearing in longitudinal slots 18, formed in the sides of the frame, and which permitof the table moving longitudinally of the machine for the purpose hereinafter explained. The table 16 is connected with the roller 13 by means of horizontal connecting links 19, which extend parallel one with each side of the frame and are mounted upon the shaft 14., one at each end of the roller 13, and are secured at their opposite ends to the respective ends of the table. From this construction it will be seen that when the paper is drawn forward during the operation of unwinding it from the roller 8 the roller 13 will be 'moved bodily forward, and thus through the medium of the connecting-links 19 will verse-shaft 21, mounted in bearings in the sides of the frame. This reservoir, which has an extended discharge portion 22, has a free oscillatory movement upon its shaftin order that its discharge portion may swing into and out of contact with the paper during its travel through the machine. The oscillatory movement of the reservoir is controlled by means of parallel arms 23, which are pivotally engaged with the respective ends of the reservoir and with the shaft 14 at opposite ends of the roller 13.. Thus when the roller moves bodily forward, as above described, the reservoir will be swung upon its pivot to bring its discharge portion into position for deliver ing the paste directly to the paper, and at the same time the table 16 will be moved to a position for sustaining the paper while receiving the paste. The paste as it flows from the reservoir is properly spread upon the paper by means of a brush 24, sustained by arms 25, attached one to each end of the brush and mounted upon the shaft 21 at the respective ends of the reservoir. The body of the brush extends parallel with the front of the reservoir and in close relation thereto and lies within the extended portion 22, with its fibers overlying the extended portion in position to act upon the paste immediately upon its discharge from the reservoir.
26 is a cutting-blade pivoted at one end to the forward end of the sides 5 of the frame and controlled by a spring 27, which is attached in any suitable manner to the sides 5 of the frame and serves to maintain the cuttingblade in a normally elevated position. This blade is operated for cutting the paper into desired lengths as it is drawn from the machine, and when moved to the cutting position its cutting edge seats in a groove 28, formed in the upper edge of connecting-bar 7.
29 indicates a mirror which is secured to one of the ears 3 in position to admit of the ready inspection of the paper while being severed into lengths in order that the figures upon the paper may be seen and the latter be properly matched.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I produce a simple and eflicient device which is admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view; but it is to be understood that I do not limit myself. to the precise details herein shown and described, inasmuch as minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a frame, of a paper-sustaining roller mounted therein, a paste-reservoir journaled for oscillation in the frame, and mechanism operable by the movements of the paper for moving the reservoir into discharging position.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a frame, of a paper-sustaining roller mounted therein, an oscillatory paste-reservoir associated with the frame, a guide-roller mounted in the frame and bodily movable longitudinally thereof, and operative connections between the guide-roller and reservoir for moving the latter to pasting position when the paper is drawn over the guide-roller.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a frame, of a paper-sustaining device mounted therein, a movable pastereservoir associated with the frame, a guideroller mounted in the frame for bodily movement longitudinally thereof, and operative connections between the guide-roller and reservoir for moving the latter to pasting position when the paper is drawn over the guideroller.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination with a frame, of a paper-sustainin g device mounted therein, a movable pastereservoir associated with the frame, a movable table sustained by the frame, and mechanism operable by the movements of the paper for moving the reservoir to discharging position and simultaneously moving the table to sustaining position.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with a frame, of a paper-sustaining device mounted therein, a movable pastereservoir associated with the frame,a guideroller mounted in the frame for bodily movement longitudinally thereof, operative connections between the guideroller and reservoir'for moving the latter to pasting position when the paper is drawn over the guideroller,a movable table sustained by the frame, and operative connections between the guideroller and table for moving the latter to susraining position simultaneously with the movement of the reservoir.
