ROLLING-MILL.
fSLPEOIFIGATION forming part of Letters Plant No. 739,416, dated September 2 2, 1903'.
Application filed April 11, 1903.
1'0 @66 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that-I, WILLIAMB. Huennsresidingat Wissahickon, in the county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in'Rolling-Mills, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to improvements in rolling-mill housings and yokes therefor.
The principle objects of the improvements are to produce housings of simplified construction and increased strength permitting the ready assemblage, adjustment, and dissociation of the parts and providing ready respective ends of the yoke 4, having the shoulders 5 for engaging the shoulders 3, the stepped offsets formed by these shoulders overlapping and holding the parts together against the upward thrust or pull on the yoke. The respective housing-heads have the lugs. 6 and 7, which register with the respective lugs 8 and 9 on each endof the yoke, the corresponding lugs having the pins 10 andll passed therethrough and drawn up by the keys 12 and 13. The vertical pins 14 further engage the yoke to the housing-heads and are drawn up by the keys 15. Thus the heads of the several housings are readily con:
nected together as a unit, readily disconnected by merely knocking out the keys and withdrawing the pins and readily handled by connecting the yoke with a crane. The firm and simple character of the engagement of the yoke with the housings avoids the defects and in conveniences that obtain with the usual Serial No. 152,148. (No man.
movable caps and integral heads heretofore employed. The housings are provided with the rabbets 16, in which are the slots 17, and the boxes or bearings 18 are engaged therewith by the bolts 19, the bearings being thereby provided with a limited movement Within their ways thus formed in the housings and being readily removable outwardly from the rolls. The upper bearings have the screwcaps 20 connected therewith, and these caps are connected with the yoke 4 by the screws 21, through which the yoke and the housingheads receive the upward thrust from the rolls 22. The rods 23, vertically reciprocated in ways in the housings by a ram 24, are adapted for liftingtheilower journal-boxes to permit their being lined up, the rods being provided with lugs 'for engaging lugs 26 on the boxes. The housings are connected and supported by their feet 27 uponthe ways 28, to which they are fastened by bolts 29. I The yoke 4' is readily removed endwise from its engagement with the standard-heads 2 by knocking out the pins 10, 11., and 14, the caps 20 and bearings 18 having been disengaged, as by lifting the caps or Withdrawing the bearings.
The strength and simplicity of the construction and the readiness with which it can be assembled, dissociated, and transported will now be seen, these advantages resulting, primarily, from the use of the yoke having the positive or stepped engagement with the disconnected head of the standards.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. Housing-standards having angular disconnected heads, and a yoke positively engaged betweensaid heads, said yokeand heads having overlapping parts to provide said en-- gagement and prevent the upward movement of said yoke, substantially as specified.
2. Housings having shouldered heads, a shouldered yoke engaged between said heads, and pin connections for clamping said heads and yoke together, said heads overlapping,
and holding said yoke against upward movement, substantially as specified.
3. A set of housing-standards having dis connected heads, in combination with a sec 0nd set of housing-standards having disoonand clamping said parts together, substanneoted heads, and a yoke positively engaging tially as specified. and uniting said standard-heads, said heads I11 testimony whereof I have hereunto set overlapping and holding said yoke against my hand, in the presence of the subscribing 5 upward movement, substantially as specified. Witnesses, this 28th day of March, A. D. 1903. 15
at. Housing-standards having angular dis 7 r A connected heads with lugs thereon, a yoke HUGHES positively engaged between said heads and \Vitnesses: having a lug thereon registering with the lugs THOMAS S. GATES, 10 on said heads, and a pin engaging said lugs CHARLES N. BUTLER.
