SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,298, dated September 22, 1903. Application filed September 5,1902. Serial No. 122,216. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, FREDERICK DoBsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boscobel, in the county of Crawford and State of Wisconsim have invented a new and useful Pump Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pump attachments.
The object of the invention is in a ready, simple, thoroughly feasible, and practical manner to equalize the power necessaryto operate a pump, so'that substantially as much power will be required to depress the pumprod as to lift it and the column of water.
' A further object is to obviate the employment of intricate parts in the construction of the device, thus, in the case of damage orl breakage, to enable a mechanic of ordinary ability to make the necessary repairs. p With these and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, thesame consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of a pump attachment, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts, there is illustrated one form of embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the elements therein exhibited may be varied or changed as to shape, proportion, and exact manner of assemblage without departing from the spirit thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a View in vertical section through an attachment constructe'd-in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is aview in perspective showing the manner in which the equalizing-spring is associated with its support. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of a nut for placing the equalizing-spring .under the desired tension.
The device' of this invention is equally adaptable for use in connection with an ordinary pump or with a windmill and in either case is to be disposed within the well, below the freezing-point thereof. For convenience of illustration it is herein shown as adapted for use in connection with a windmill.
Referring to the drawings, ldesignates a i section of tubing constituting a spring-casing',
which is threaded externally at each end for f the reception of nuts 2 and 3, respectively',
l thesaid nuts being adapted to have connected with them pipes 4 and 5, the former of which extends to the top of the well and the latter is connected with the cylinder,and as the manner of association of the pipes with 'the parts named may be of any preferred characterv and as it will be well understood detailed illustration is deemedunnecessary.
Disposed on the interior of the upper portion of the spring-casing is a peripheral shoulder 6, upon which bears a power-equalizing spring-support 7 the same being a disk provided with a central oriice S, ala-teral orifice 9, and a radialslot 10. The oriiice S is' adapted to receive a connecting-rod 11, the upper end of which is provided with a coupling 12 for connection with a pump-rod 18 and the lower Y end with a coupling 14 for engagement with a suction-rod 15.
Hous'ed within the casing is a coiled powerequalizing spring 1G, the upper terminal of which is formed into a whirl 17, disposed being provided with a teat 23, to be engaged by a whirl 24, constitutingthe lower terminal of the equalizing-spring, and with an orifice 25, to be engaged by an upturned toe 26 of the said whirl. The spring is substantially of about one half the llength of `the casing,
and the nut 22 is equal in diameter to the same, and it will be seen that by turning 'the nut upon the rod 11 the spring may be placed under requisite tension to Ycause equalv balancing of power. 11 is threaded for about one-half its length, thus to insure a ,range of movement of the nut 22 to place the spring under the requisite adjustment for any contingency that might As herein shown, the rod arise; but it is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited to this arrangement, as it may be increased or diminished and still be within the scope of the invention.
By the arrangement of parts exhibited it will be seen that upon the downstroke of the pumprod resistance will be presented by the spring which will be equal or substantially equal to that presented to the suction-rod on its lift, so that all jerking and unequal motion of the p ump and suction-rods, with attendant danger of bending or breaking, will be positively obviated. Furthermore, provision is made by which the spring may be regulated to wells of different depth, thereby extending the range of usefulness of the device.
While the arrangement of parts herein shown has been found thoroughly effective in operation and will be found in a positive and reliable manner to perform the functions designed, it is to be understood that the invention is' not to be limited to the exact details disclosed, as it will be obvious that various minor changes as to proportions of the vari ous parts maybe resorted to and still be within the scope of the invention. l

l. An equalizing device for pump-rods, comprising a coiled spring provided at each end with a transverse whirl and adjacent thereto with an ol'f'set and a terminal toe, and relatively iixed and movable members for respective engagement by the terminal whirls of the spring, and each having a slot and an opening to receive said offset and toe.
An equalizing device for pu nlp-rods, oomprising a rod, a coiled spring provided at each .end with a transverse whirl and adjacent thereto with an offset and a terminal toe, and relatively fixed and movable members for respective engagement by the terminal whirls of the spring, and each having a slot and an opening to receive said offset and toe, and said members also having openings respectively to guide and engage said rod.
3. In a device of the class described, a casing provided in its upper portion with an inward-extending shoulder, a support resting npon the shoulder and provided with a central orifice having a slot extending therefrom and with a lateral orifice, a connecting-rod having its lower portion threaded, a tension-nut engaging the threaded portion of the rod and provided with an open sided slot, and an equalizingwspring having its upper whirl provided with a bend to engage the radial slot and with a toe to engage the lateral orifice, and its lower whirl provided with a bend to engage the said open-sided slot.

In a device of the class described, a casing provided near its upper portion with an inward-extending shoulder, a support resting upon the shoulder and provided with a central orifice having a radial slot extending therefrom and with a lateral orifice, a connecting-rod having its lower portion threaded, a tension-nut engaging the threaded portion of the rod and rovided with an open-sided slot and a downward-extending teat, and an equalizing-sprin g having its upper whirl provided with a bend to engage the radial slot, with a loop to bear upon the support and with a toe to engage the lateral orifice, and its lower whirl provided with a bend to engage the said open-sided slot and a loop to engage the said teat.
5. In a device of the class described, a casing provided in its upper portion with a shoulder, a support resting thereon and provided with a central orifice having a radial slot extending therefrom and with a lateral orifice, a connecting-rod having its lower portion threaded, a tensionnut engaging the threaded portion of the rod and provided with an open-sided slot, a downward-extending teat and a lateral orifice, and an equalizingspring having its upper whirl provided with a bend to engage with the radial slot, with a loop to bear upon the support and with a toe to engage the lateral orifice, and its lower whirl provided with a bend to engage the open-sided slot of the tension-nut, a loop to engage the teat thereof, and a toe to engage Ithe orifice.
