IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-GENERATOR.
TO ALL WHOMIT MAY GONCERN: l
Be it known that we, EDWIN CHAPMAN and CHARLES T. ALLAIRn, of Rochester, in the county of 01msted, and State of Minnesota., have inventeda. new and usefulllmprovement in Steam-Generators; and we do hereby declare that the followingpis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification. v
This invention relates to a new and improved construction of boilers for the generation of steam, whereby the steam-generating surface is greatly increased; and it consists, firstly, in the peculiar construction of the' re-box and combustion-chamber, and secondly, in thelrnanner in which atmospheric air is introduodd into the fire-box, as We will proceed to describe.

This generator is formed of an outer and an inner shell, surrounded ny a jacket.
The flue for the ascent of the smoke and products of combustion is between `the jacket and the outer shell.
^ A represents the jacket, B the outer shell, C the inner` shell. D is the furnace or {ire-box, Elie a combustion-chamber, and F is the air-tube. G indicates the grate.
It will be seen from the drawing that the hre-box is cone-shaped, and that 'the products of combustion pass throng-h the water-space in diving-ues, marked J', and from theminto the ascending flue H, as indicated by the arrows. The combustion-chamber E is`placed above the top of the iues J, which ues are connected to en o set in the inner shell, which may be considered the dividing line between the combustion-chamber and the fire-boar, as seen in the drawing.
The most important feature of our invention is the introduction of u current of atmospheric air through the grate and fuel into the midst of the fire by the pipe or tube F. To produce perfect combustion' in a. furnace, it is well known that a certain quantity of nir (or oxygen) is required, and that in moet cases, and in fact in all euses where the air to supply the combustion is introduced in the ordinary manner, that supply is very decient, and the consequence is imperfect combustion and waste-cf fuel. The quantity of air whichwe thus introduce into the furnace, and by which we remedy the evils ot`-imperi`ect combustiorn'is regulated by a valve seen at a, and the current of air through the tube F may im'pinge against c. plate, F', placed over the end ofthe air-pipe, as seen in the drawing, and discharge the air in o, thin horizontal sheet, flowing-in every direction from the plate F., or it may be discharged thronghsmall apertures, in iets from a pipe or funnel-shaped hen'd, as may be deemed most advisable.
The outside shell andjacket may be either conical in shape, or -formed with parallel sides, as may be most convenient. c indicates stays for strengthening the boiler. K 4indicates the steam-space, which, it will be seen, is surrounded by the heated products of combustion. L indicates the door or aperture for the introduction of fuel. 4
It will be seen that by this arrangement and construction of lire-box .ve notonly get a very broad gratesurface for our fuel, ,but a very extensive Stcamgcnerating or re-suri`ace in our boiler, and with the increased combustion 'of the fuel which we produce by our method ot` supplying the re with oxygen, we feel confident that we furnish to the public what is so much needed, a safe and most economical steamgenerator.
Havingthus-described our invention, we claim as new, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent l The stea1n-generator, constructed as described, consisting of the conical furnace D, having the air-tube F, and supporting,r the conical combustion-chamber E, the points of their connection forming shoulders, connected by the diving-lines J with the casing B, enclosing the water-space, and placed conceutricallywithin the outer o casing A, thc space between said casings forming the' ascending ilue H, all arranged and operating as herein shown and described.
