IMPROVED SPRING-BED BOTTOM.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, A. MILTON BLAKE, of Canton, in the county of Stark, and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spring-Bed Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereonofv which drawings- Y Figure l is a longitudinal section of a bed with my improved bottom.
Figure 2 is a haltI plan of the same.
Figure 3 is a cross-section of the same.
Figure 4: is an enlarged View of a slat and itsconnections.
The nature of my invention consists in the peculiar arrangement of slats, springs, iexible straps, and pins or bungs, in such a manner as to form a bed-bottom that shall adapt itself to each position ofthe body, and, at
' the same time, shall be of moderate cost, and can be folded up into a compact form for transportation.
'Io enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will-proceed to describe its construction and operation'.
The bedstead shown in drawings is of an ordinary form. The cleats C C are secured to the side pieces E E; and on these cleats areplaeed the eross-slats B B, to which the conical spiral springs A A are secured, by means of small staples', a a, as shown in figs. l and 3.v The'straps D D are made of linen or any other suitable material, and run across on the top of the springs A A, and are drawn tight, and secured to the side pieces E E' of the bedstcad by means of the screws 6 b, with washers, c e, thereon, 'as shown in fig. 3. To these straps D D the slats F G are secured, in such a way as that every other slat -F F shall come directly over a spring, A. A round pin or bung, H, is secured under the strap D,vby means of a screw or rivet, K, which passes, through said bung, and through the strap D, into the slat F, and thus the three are firmly held together. This arrangement is fully shown in ig. 4. The spring A has the top coil bent hat, so as to give a good bearing to the strap D; and, the bung II being inserted in the spring A, it holds said spring in its proper position under the slat F during any motion of said slat. The slats G G are fastened to the strapsD D, between the slats F F, by means of screws or rivets, d cl, and are held up by said straps.
It is easily seen that this arrangement allows an easy motion to each slat, and still keeps each separate part in its proper position during any motion of said slats, and also that the weight upon any one spring is distributed, by the straps D D, to the adjoining ones, and thus each spring is protected from' injury by excessive load.
The amount oi' spring or motion desired in the bed can be variedby changing the tension of the straps D D.
By taking out the screws b b, the slats F G, with the straps D D and bungs II II, can be rolled up into a cylindrical form, and the cross-slats B B, with the springs A A thereon, are easilylifted from the 'cleats C C, thus getting the whole bed-bottom into a convenient form for transportation.
Having thus fully described my improved bed-bottom, I do not claim as my invention any part ofthe bedstead shown; nor do I claim the cross-slats B B, nor cleats C 0,1101' the slats F G, nor straps D D, nor springs A A, .taken separately,as all these have been before described and used; but
'.What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by IietteisiPatent, is-
'Ihe arrangement and combination ofl the slats F G, straps D D, bungs II H, and springs A A, when said slats F G are so arranged as that each alternate one is supported by a spring, A, and the others by the straps D D, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
As evidence that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
. A. MILTON BLAKE. Witnesses DAVID HAMMOND, GEO. S. LESTER.
