ALFRED A. RODMAN, OF \VASI'IINGTON, IOXVA.
CUFF- HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 737,664, dated September 1, 1903.
Application filed December 31, 1902. Serial No. 137,307. (No model.)
class of cud-holders wherein the cuffs are held together by a button carried by the cuffholder and the wristband of the shirt or other garment is held together by means of a removable button in the usual manner, the cuff being adj ustably and-removably held in place with relation to the wristband or sleeve of the garment by means of the engagement of the cuff-holder and the button on the wristband of the shirt or other garment.
The objects of my invention are to provide a device of this character which is more easily and cheaply constructed than others heretofore placed on the market and one which is convenient and easily applied and disengaged from the garment; and it consists of a casing upon which is mounted a button and within which the inner ends of the adjustable clamping members are located and held.
My'invention further consists in certain other novel features of construction and combinations of parts, such as will be brought out more fully hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved cuffholder. Fig. 2 is a view of the parts detached or disassembled. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the casing is formed, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section on line a: so of Fig. 1.
A indicates the hollow body portion or casing. This can be made in any desired shape, but, as shown, is preferably rectangular, being closed on all sides except one. This casing is formed by stamping or drawnwork or from a blank, one half, 4, of which blank is wider than the other half, 5, and bent or folded together at the longitudinal center of the blank, the wider or outlying portions 6 6 of the blank adapted to be bent upwardly and over the upper narrower half of the blank, thus forming the side edges of the casing and embracing the narrower half to retain it in position. A button B, consisting of a'shank and a head, which may be pivoted, if desired, is secured upon the outer face of one of the flat sides or top of the casingA in any suitable mannerfor instance, as that shown in the drawings, wherein the shank of the button is pronged or divided, the separate prongs being received and secured in apertures formed in the casing; but I do not restrict myself to this form.
Received within the casing and projecting outwardly from the open end 7 thereof is a substantially U-shaped wire-clasping memher 0. This clamping or clasping member consists of a piece of resilient wire, the centralportion l of which is received and fits within the closed end of the casing. This central portion 1 is secured within the casing by means of indentations 13 or other fastening means. A pair of diverging arms 2 2 extend one from each end of the central portion, which arms protrude some distance beyond the casing. Midway of their length these arms are inturned, forming the clasping members proper, 3 3, and are corrugated or serrated, the extreme free ends 8 8 of the.
clasping members received within the casing A and between the arms 2 2. As shown, the clasping members 3 3 are similarly corrugated .and lie adjacent each other, whereby the coincident concave corrugations form eyes 9 9, which are closed by the coinciding convex corrugations 1O 10. At the outer ends the two clasping members diverge slightly, as shown at 11 11. The casing operates to protect and guard the rear end of the resilient wire portion, thus leaving no outstanding pr-ojections to interfere with and become caught in the sleeves or apparel, and the arms 2 2 serve to guard the inturned ends 3 3.
The operation and manner of use is as follows: The button B on the casing is inserted in the rear buttonholes of the cufi, so that the casing and the projecting arms are on the inside of the cuff and concealed thereby, the button B retaining the cuff in position. The wristband of the shirt is also provided with the usual button of any suitable style, which is received in the buttonholes of the wristband to retain the wristband in circular position. The end is now slipped over the hand, the diverging outer ends 11 11 of the clasping member being guided to the shank of the button, which retains the wristband in proper position, and are thereby pressed apart to inclose and surround the shank, the arms springing together again when the shank of the button is received in one of the eyes and operating to adj ust-ably secure the cuff to shank of the button carried by the wristband, the end carrying the holder and being retained in position relative to the shirtsleeve in an easy yet effectual manner. To disengage the cuff and holder from the but: ton on the shirt-sleeve, a smart pull is all that is necessary, which operates to withdraw the clasping member from the shank of the button on the sleeve. The drawings show the clasping members provided with two eyes; but a larger number may be provided, the object being merely to disclose the fact that the cuff can be adjusted with reference to the shirt-sleeve,whereby the width of cuff appearing below the coat-sleeve may be regulated. The sides of the casing A, and more particularly at the walls of the open end 7, act as fulcrums for the outer portion 2 2 of the clasping members when the parts are forced open by the entrance therebetween of the shank of the button on the wristband of the shirt. The clasping member is retained in the easing by means of the indentations 13 13, which engage the member at the corners where the base portion 1 joins the side wires 2 2; but it is evident that they might be otherwise placed without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention.
It is evident that changes might be made in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not desire to limit myself to the exact construction herein shown; but,
Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A cuff-holder comprising a casing composed of a single blank, the blank folded at its longitudinal median line, one half of the blank being wider than the remaining half thereof, the outlying portions of the Wider half of the blank being bent over the narrower half and embracing the latter, a button mounted on the casing, and clasping members secured within the casing and protruding therefrom.
2. A cufi-holder comprising a casing, a button mounted thereon and clasping members, a portion of the clasping members received within the casing, the remainder of the clasping members bent to form a pair of protruding divergent arms, the outer portions of the arms inturned, and correspondingly corrugated, the free ends ofthe inturned portions of the arms received within the casing.
3. A cufi-holder comprising a casing, a button mounted thereon and a clasping member, a portion of which is secured to the casing, the remaining portion of the clasping member formed into a pair of divergent arms, the outer portions of the arms bent inwardly toward each other and approximately parallel with the arms, the inturned ends provided with corresponding corrugations, and abutting or in contact with each other, the arms constituting guards for the inturned ends thereof.
4. A securing device comprising a support, a fastening means secured thereon, and a clasping means, the clasping means formed into a substantially U shape, and provided with rentrant inturned arms, the base portion being retained within the support, the ends of the arms loosely and movably received within the support.
5. A securing device comprising a suitable support, a fastening means located thereon,
and a clasping member, the member consisting of a body portion and a pair of connected arms, the base of the body portion retained within the support, the arms bearing against the sides of the support and protruding therefrom, and provided with inturned ends, adapted to receive and clasp an independent member therebetween, the entrance of such independent member between the inturned ends adapted to force the arms apart on the outer edges of support as fulcrums.
6. A device of the character described comrisin a casin a fastenin member located on the casing, and a clasping member secured within the casing, the clasping member provided with bent or doubled arms, the reentrant portions of the arms being corrugated.
7. A cuffholder comprising a casing, a fastening device mounted thereupon, and a yielding clasping member, a portion of the member secured with the casing, the remainder of the member protruding from the casing and bent to form a pair of arms, the outer ends of the arms being inturned and corrugated, the free ends of the inturned portions lying adjacent one another, the arms constituting guards for the inturned portions.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
