PATENTED AUG. 25, 1903.
V wue/wtoz W LEWIS GURRYGOMB ATTACHMENT.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 1a, 1903.
0 MODEL.
Patented August 25, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM LEWIS, OF ELKINS, WEST VIRGINIA.
CURRYCOMB ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 736,984, dated August 25, 1903. Application filed May 18, 1903. $erialNo. 157.64'7. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkins, in the county of Randolph and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ourrycomb Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to currycombs and brushes or the like; and it consists of certain novel features of combination and construction of parts, as will be hereinafter clearly set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
The object of my invention, among others, is to provide a simple though reliably efficient form of handle for a currycomb or the like which may be easily adjusted to occupy any desired position either upon the back of the currycomb or adapted to cooperate with the handle thereof.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter made clearly apparent, reference be ing had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of an ordinary currycomb, showing my invention applied to use thereon. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the currycomb provided with my attachment and showing the attachment in co operation with the handle instead of with the curry-comb proper. Fig.3 is a perspective view of the preferred means employed by me in connecting the handle attachment.
In order to conveniently refer to the various details of my invention and elements deemed necessary to show a practical application thereof to use, numerals will be employed, the same numeraLapplying to a similar part throughout the several views.
Referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 indicates a currycomb of the usual or any preferred construction, having, as is com mon,
a handle-shank 2, to which is secured in the usual or any preferred way acontrollinghandle 3. It becomes very desirable to provide a suitable handle whereby the hand of the operator may be inserted thereunder or between the handle and the back of the curryson using the currycomb.
comb, and with this object in viewI provide a form of handle indicated by the numeral 4 and consisting of a suitable piece of sheet metal bent at each end to provide the inwardly-directed branches 5 and 6. The branch 5 is provided with a square aperture designed to fit over the free end of the bracket or lug 7. The branch 6 is provided with the integral extension 8, which is adapted to be pivotally secured to the ear 9, as by means of a rivet, the ear 9 being in turn pivotally secured to the collar 11, as by the rivet 10, whereby the collar 11, which is adapted to surround .the shank 2, may have a relative movement suitable cushion, preferably of rubber, as indicated by the numeral 14, such cushion being designed to protect the hand of the per- It will thus be seen that the handle may be disposed, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the hand of the operator may rest directly upon the back of the currycomb, enabling a proper use to be made ofthe instrument in cleaning horses, though it will also be understood that said handle 4: may be placed either upon the upper or lower side of the handle proper, 3, when for any reason it may be desirable to do so, thus providing a convenient and reliably efficient means for securing the currycomb to the hand of the operator, so that it will not casually slip away from him. The cushion 14, of rubber or other, preferred material, secured to the inner face of the handle 4,, will protect the knuckles of the operator and serve as a shield while disposed in the position shown in Fig. 2.
It will be understood that my improved currycomb attachment may be readily secured in its operative position upon an ordinary currycomb with but little change, thus enabling my attachment to be employed at very little expense, though affording great protection to the hand of the operator and at the same time greatly facilitate the use of the currycomb as a cleaning instru ment for horses or the like.
While I have described the preferred combination and construction of parts, I Wish to comprehend such substantial equivalents and substitutes as may be considered as falling fairly within the scope and purview of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described attachment for currycombs or the like, comprising an adjustable auxiliary handle 4, bent to provide the terminals 5 and 6, the former being provided With an angular aperture to receive a bracket 7
