TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, .ONSVILLE E. PRAY, of Portsmouth, in the county of Rockingham, and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and improved Machine for Cutting Dye-Woods; and I do'hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which` Will enable others skilled in the art tok make and use the same, reference -heing had to the accompanying drawings, and vto the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to-a new and improved machine for cutting dye-Woods into pieces or chips directly from the log. The invention consists of a rotary drum, provided with cutters at its periphery, and arranged in relation with an inclined trough, containing a feed-bar, which is operated by a rack-and pinion, as hereinafter fully shown ind described. Inthe accompanying sheet of drawings- :Figure 1 is aside sectional view of my invention, taken in the line a; fr, fig. 2.
Figure 2, a plan or top view of the same Figure 3, a section ofthe same, taken in the line yy, iig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents a frame, which mayhelconstructed in any proper manner, to support the working-parts, and
B represen-tea drum, the shaft a of which has its bearings .in standards b b, at. the sides of' the frame. This drurn has its arms c east or formed-with chambers d, at their outer ends, to receivecutters O, the cutting-edges of ivhich project through slots dx, in the periphery of the drum,Y the slots extending entirely across the periphery, andpadmitting of the free escape ofthe chips from the log. The cutters C are formed with serrated edges,
and they-may be all in one piece, or composed of a, plurality of pieces, and secured in the chambers cl, by setscrewsfor keys, as will be fully understood by referring to iig. 3. D is an inclined trough, on the frame A, the lower or depressed end of which is Vquite close to the periphery of the drum B. This trough is ofsufiicient width and depthto receive the log of dye-wood to b e' cut, andwithin said trough there is placed a bar, E,
having a rack, vg, at its under side, into which a-pinion, h, gears, said pinion being on a shaft, F, on the framing, and having a-crank or hand-Wheel, G, on one end, as shown in iig. 2. v
The operationiis as follows: The drum B is rotated by any convenient power, and the log of dye-wood to be chipped or cut is placed in the trough D, in front of the feed-bar E, the latter, by turning the shaft F, being forced down through the medium of the rack and pinion, and keeping the en d of the log in contact with the periphery of the drum B, 'the cutters O chipping the-end of the log. I
The device is extremely simple and eiicient, will perform lits work rapidly, and may be constructed at a veryriioderate cost.
` Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and ,desire to secure hy Letters Patent- The drum B,`constructed as described, its radial arms c provided with ohambers'd in their outer ends for the reception o'f the adjustable cutters O, and the periphery of said wheel, provided with transverse slots dx, as herein described for the purpose specified.
