Description
PATENTBD AUG. 11, 190s. E. E. STUVER. CLASP PoR SUSPENDER ENDS.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 21. 1903. N0 MODEL.
UNITED" l )STATES latented .August 11, 1903.
EUGENE E. STUVER, OF BLUEMOUND, ILLINOIS.
CLASP FOR SUSPENDER-ENDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patel-1tv No. 736,170, dated August 11, 1,903.
Application tiled May 21,1903.
To all whom it 11i/ty concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE E. STUVER, a
1 citizen of the United States, residing at Bluemound, in the county of Macon and State Of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clasps for Suspender-Ends, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in Suspenders, and is more particularly adapted in its application to suspender ends or tabs,
the objects being to provide a device of this character which, primarily, will-avoid the use of buttons or buttonholes on the trousers or other garment to be supported. My improve- Inent contemplates the substitution therefor of a neat, simplejand easily-operated device which will positively engage the material of the garment and removably retain it until it is desired to release the garment from the suspender; and it consists in an inexpensive gripping device applied to the tabs of the Suspenders and adapted to receive between its jaws the materialof the garment, the jaws adapted to releasably grasp the material and yet not injure it in the slightest degree.
To these ends my invention consists in cer` tain novel combinations of part-s, such as will be more fully described hereinafter, and particularly set forth in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l isA an enlarged view, in side elevation, of my improvement attached to a suspender-tab and grasping a piece ofjmaterial; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view with the jaws open.
loosely through apertures 7 7 isa staple 8, curved or bent' in the are of :a circle the center of which is the hinge, 'and hinged upon the cross-bar ofthis staple is a clamping-lever 9, provided with a cam 10, which is adapted Serial No. 158.159. (No modelJ of the pivotal support.
To release the garment, all that is necessary is to lift the lever, whereupon the pressure is removed and the material can be withdrawn from the jaws.
The plates are preferably constructed of some resilient material, and they may be spreadapart and the jaws opened whenever the lever is swung backward or open,as shown in Fig. 2. The staple is formed or bent into the arc of a circle to permit plate l to move up and down thereon 0n its hinge without binding.
It is evident that manyslight changes might be made in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my in vention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth; but
Having thus fully disclosed my invention, what. I claim as new, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, i s
A suspender-clasp comprising two plates hinged together at one end and having jaws at the free ends, one jaw having holes therein, a staple extending through and fitted tO these holes', said staple bent in the arc of a circle with the hinge as its center and the ends of the staple secured to the other plate, and a lever hinged to the staple center and provided with a rounded cam which forces and locks, the jaws together when swung inwardly against the adjacent jaw.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EUGENE E. STUVER IVitnesses: l
JACOB DYE, ALONZO SMITH.
