Description
INVENTOR M I ATTORNEY,
PATENTED AUG.. 4, 1903 A. J. KOCH.
SUSPENDER BELT. urmoumn rnlnn JUNE 4, 1902.
N0 MODEL.
UNITED STATES Patented August 4, 1903.
ALFRED J. KOCH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SU SPEN D,ER-BE'LT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 735,274, dated August 4, 1903.
Application filed June 4, 1902. Serial No. 110,123. (No model-l To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, ALFRED JJKOCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspender-Belts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to interconvertible suspenders and waist-belts, and has for its object to provide a device of the class described which will possess points of advantage in convenience, simplicity, inexpensiveness, effectiveness, and general efficiency.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described which will form the shoulder-straps of a pair of suspenders or a belt, whichever may be desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described which after it has been adjusted to the wearers waist may be fastened and unfastened Withprovements.
rear buttonhole member.
out disturbing theadj usting buckle or clasp,
whereby the wear of the belt is lessened and the fastening'and unfasteniug of the belt are accomplished by other means and in a quicker and easier manner. 7
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described which will be composed of two equal similar and reversible portions.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is aperspective of a pair of suspenders provided with my im- 7 Fig. 2 is a perspective of the shoulder-straps of said suspenders converted into awaist-belt. Fig. 3 is a sectional View through the connection between the rear end of a shoulder-strap and the upper end of a Fig. 4. is a sec- ]tionalview through the front end of a shoulder-strap and the adjustable device.
Corresponding parts in all the figures are denoted by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates one of the shoulder-straps of a pair of suspenders, which is provided at the-rear end with means of detachably fastening the said strap to the rear buttonhole members 2 of the suspenders. I prefer to provide the rear end of the shoulder-strap 1 with a link 3 to receive the fastening device carried by the upper ends of the rear buttonhole members and which is preferably a piece of flexible material 2', proof such adjustable device 7 and secured thereto by the stud part 9 of a clasp-button, acting as a rivet and provided with a spring-socket, which when such piece of material is looped about the front buttonhole members 10 of a I pair of suspenders may besnapped upon such stud portion 9. The flexible material may be reinforced by a hook 11, inserted between the folded portions and secured in place by the stud 9.
It will be evident that the shoulder-pieces and said front buttonhole members and the ends of the shoulder-straps 1 connected a two part belt is thereby formed, as illustrated in Fig. 2. Moreover, by placingthe adjustable device 7 at a suitable point to adjust the belt to the waist of the wearer it will be unnecessary to move the buckle in unfastening or fastening the belt, since the claspbuttons may be used for the purpose of fastoning and unfastening the belt. Thus, as will be seen, the shoulder-pieces 1 are interconvertible to either of two uses, for if they be connected to the buttonhole members, as before described and as shown in Fig. 1,.they serve as members of a pair of suspenders,
while if they be connected one withthe other,
as shown in Fig. 2, they serveas members of a waist-belt. The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood and appreciated. The shoulder-strap 1 may be of any desirable material, and with the rear buttonhole members 2 and front buttonhole members 10 a person has both a very convenient pair of suspenders and an easily-adjusted belt, for, as will be seen, if the connecting member which is attached to the front end of one shoulder-strap 1 be connected to the connecting member which is attached to the rear end of the other shoulder-strap 1 a connection is thereby formed which is adjustable longitudinally of the first-mentioned shoulder-strap and by means of which the shoulderstraps may be fastened together.
I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the details of construction and arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modifications may be made in the features of construction and arrangement in the adaptation of the device to various conditions of use without departing from the spirit and scope of myinvention and improvements. I therefore reserve the right to all such variation and modification as properly fall within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. Interconvertible suspenders and waistbelts comprising a pair of interchangeable members each of which is provided at one end thereof with one member of a fastening device, which device forms a connection which is adjustable longitudinally of one of the interchangeable members, said members being respectively provided at their opposite 3o ends with one member of a fastening device which comprises a stud and a spring-socket which are engageable one with the other; front buttonhole members each connectible with one end of an interchangeable member; 35 and rear buttonhole members each connectible with the other end of an interchangeable member oppositely of the end with which the front buttonhole member is connected.
2. A waist-belt formed of a pair of inter-- 4o changeable members which are adapted to be used as shoulder-straps, and buttonhole members connected with the straps to form suspenders; each of said interchangeable members being provided at one end thereof 45 with a connection which is adjustable longitudinally of one of said members, and being provided at the other end thereof with a fastening device which comprises a stud and a spring-socket which are engageable one with so the other.
In testimony whereof Iv have signed my name in the presence of the subscribing wit- ALFRED ,J. KOCH. Witnesses:
