PATENT OFFICE..

Ferien-POST..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 734,690, dated July 28, 1903.
Application filed April 18 l9Q3. Serial No. 153,193. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom; it may concern:
Be it` known that I, SQUIRE FIELDER, of Elizabethtown,Bartholomewcounty,Indiana, (post-office address the same,) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in-` Fence-Posts, of which the following is a speciication.
My invention pertains especially to an end or corner post for wire fences, the essential' features ot' which consist of a post placed on the ground, not lpartially buried therein, which is braced with tension-rods in such a way as to effectually resist the pull of a wire fence.
My invention consists in the following combination of elements as hereinafter described l Abrace 2 is secured to post lat a point near its upper end by any suitable means, such The lower end of brace 2 is bent so as to be in the same plane as the bottom of the post and rests upon a rock or other suitable support. A tension-rod 4 is hooked through a hole 5 in brace 2 at a point close to the lower end of said brace and passes back through post l at a point near its lower end and is provided with a threaded nut 6, so that said rod can be put undeI1 any desired tension.
Hooked into the lower end of post 1 are two downwardly from said post 1 and secured to a timber 8 or other suitable anchorage buried in the ground. It will be seen that the post willl be held rigidly in position by means of this bracing and is capable of resisting a pull in the direction of brace 2.
As an additional side brace to support the post against lateral strains I provide braces 9, which are bent at their upper ends 10, as shown, to both form a hook and stay. Said Vbraces hook into the post at any suitable distance from the ground. By bending the upperends l0 of braces 9 I am enabled to get a tension-brace having a certain degree of lateral leverage on the upper end of the post, and at the same time I provide a connection to resist a tension which will not pull out.
The lower ends of braces 9 are secured to any desirable anchorage.
I claim as my invention- In a fence-post the combination of a main post, l, a brace, 2, secured to post, 1, at a point near its top, and extending outwardly and downwardly therefrom; an adjustable `tension-rod 4., secured to the outer end of brace 2, and to post, 1, near its lower end; braces 7, secured to the lower end of post, 1,
-and'diverging outwardly and downwardly therefrom, said braces, 7, secured to a suitable anchorage, 8; lateral braces, 9, bent at their upper ends to form a hooked offset 10, secured to post, 1, said braces diver-ging outwardly and downwardly and secured to a suitable anchorage, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. l
SQUIRE AAFIELDER.
