PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES B. CONNOLLY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 733,945, dated July 21, 1903.
Application filed November 12, 1902. $erial No. 130,938. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES B. OONNOLLY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, Kings county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Suspending Books or the Like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to clamps or devices .for suspending books or other articles from fixtures or suitable supportssuch, for instance, as the pivot-head of telephone-trans mitters, knobs, or the like-and has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, and efficient device of the character described.
The invention contemplates the novel details of construction and features of improvement hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof, wherein- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved clamp adjusted in position on the pivot-head of a telephone attachment and showing a telephoneindex-booksuspended therefrom. Fig. 2 is a top view of the clamp. Fig. 3is a side view thereof. the line 4 4 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 5 is a top view of a modified form of my improved device, and Fig. 6 is a side view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several views.
- enable the claws when in position upon a suitable support (see Fig. 1) to more firmly grasp the same. Four of these arms or fingers a, having claws b, are shown in the embodiment of my invention disclosed in Figs. 1 to 4;'but it will be obvious that the clamp may have a less number or a greater number for different purposes, as desired. A loop or hook a is provided upon the plate A, which hook is preferably stamped up from the plate or base A, to which loop or hook the book or other Fig. 4 is a section thereof on article B is removably attached by means of the loop or cord a (see Fig. 1,) in which figure my improved device is shown clamped over the pivot-head D of a telephone attachment.
The entire clamp is preferably made of a single piece of sheet metal stamped and shaped to form, as shown in Figs. 1 to 4, and when the clamp is placed in position upon a supportsuch, for instance, as shown in Fig. 1the claws I), having the bead 11 will firmly grasp or embrace the screw-head or the like D, thus providing a firm hold for the articles to be suspended from the hook a of the device.
In Figs. 5 and 6 I have shown a modified embodiment of my invention, in which'figures I have shown my improved clamping device constructed of a plurality of wires, forming arms or fingers a, projecting radially from a central stem d, which stem terminates in or is provided with a hook or eye (I for the reception of a cord or the like at tached to the article to be suspended therefrom. The fingers a are bent at an angle at or near their outer ends, forming clampingclaws b, and are also bent slightly inwardly at or near the extremities'of the claws, forming a bead or ridge b as shown in Fig. 6. Any number of these wire fingers having the claws described may be utilized.
The modified form of my device just described is clamped upon a suitable support, -such as a screw-head or other desired fixture, in a manner similar to that described with reference to Fig. 1 and constitutes an exceedingly simple and effective clamping device for the purpose described.
In using the expression hook or eye in the foregoing specification. and appended claims I wish it understood that any means for accomplishing the same object is intended to be covered thereby.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is
1. A device of the character described,
comprising a base, a plurality of fingers pro 4. A device of the character described, comprising a base, a plurality of fingers projecting outwardly from said base on a plane therewith and being bent at their ends to form clamping-claws, and a. hook upon the device, a pair of said claws being adapted to grasp between them the opposing surfaces of 20 a suitable support, substantially as described.
JAMES B. CONNOLLY.
