j SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 733,784, dated July 14, 1903.

To a/ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that l, CHARLES S.WHITNEY, a citizen of the United States,residing at Springfield, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Massaging Implements, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in massaging implements.
My invention is illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is an elevation of the implement. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a partly-sectional view of the oscillating lever-arm.
I have here illustrated in a diagrammatic way one form of my invention; but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the particular thing shown.
Like parts are indicated by the same letters throughout the several figures.
A is the handle, inclosing the shaft B,Which is provided with ball-bearings A' A2 in the handle A. The shaft has secured to it at one end a cam B', having a circular groove B2 in its face eccentric to the shaft B. The handle A terminates at that end in a circular plate A3. The casing A4, inclosing the cam B', is secured to the plate A3 by the vscrews A5 A5. Also inclosed in the casing Al is an oscillating lever C, pivoted at C' to the plate A3. The pivot is provided with ballbearings to reduce' the friction to a minimum. The inner end of the lever C overlies the cam B and has a pin C2 projecting into the camgroove B2 and is provided with an antifriction-roller C3. The outer end of the lever C projects through a slot A6 in the casing and has secured in it the massaging member C4. The other end of the handle is provided with a cap A7, inclosing the ball-bearings A2. The shaft B projects through an aperture in the cap A7 and is connected,j by means of a universal joint B3, with a flexible shaft D. `The flexible shaft may be driven in any desired manner. I prefer to use an electric motor.
The use and operation of my invention are as follows: The implement isvgrasped in the hand of the operator and the massaging member C4 applied to the patient. The 'shaft will be driven at a high speed, and the engage-4 ment of the antifriction-roller C3 in the camgroove B2 will give the massaging member a rapid rocking or oscillating motion,and a massaging effect will be produced thereby.
The implement being very simple in construction can be made very light in weight and can therefore be manipulated with ease by the operator.
The cap A4 may be removed or omitted altogether, an'd the parts will remain in undisturbed relation. The oiling, if any, can be effected at such times, and for the purpose of facilitating this the cap could be attached in some other way less permanent than that indicated. v
I claimi l .In a massaging implement the combination of a tubular handle having diaphragm-like bearing-plates therein, with a rigid shaft extending through said handle and bearings and provided with flange-like bearing-plates outside of and opposed to the diaphragm-like bearings, one of said flange-like bearings adj ustable along the shaft so as to keep the parts in their proper relation, balls between the opposed bearings, a flexible shaft attached to one end of said rigid shaft, a cam-plate attached to the other end of said shaft and at right angles thereto and provided with an eccentric groove in its outer face, a casing at the end of the handle and rigidly secured thereto and containing' such cam-plate, an oscillating leve-r projecting at right angles to the rigid shaft and provided with a long p0rtion parallel with the shaft anda bearing-pin secured in such casing and passing through the long part of said oscillating lever to pivot it, a massaging device on the outer end of such lever and an antifriction-pinon the inner end of said oscillating lever adapted to enter the eccentric groove, and a removable cover to inclose the Working parts.
