To all whom it may 007mm:
Beit known that LAUGUsr SUNDH,of Yonkers, Westchester county, New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipe or Rod Coupling Devices, of which the following is a specifiation.
The invention relates to a means of coupling pipes, rods, &c., to any suitable support.
The invention is here shown embodied in a junction or outlet box for electrical conductors, the said box containing suitable terminals and circuit connections and the said conductors being inclosed in a pipe which is secured to the box by my coupling.
The invention c0nsists,in combination wit the support, of a semitubular projection extending therefrom, a separate semi-annular piece of the same internal diameter as said projection, and means for adjustably securing said piece to said projection to form a tubular clamp, also in the various combinations pointed out in the claims. 7
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a junction-box between standards 6, which extend upwardly above the middle section, so that said cover may be turned down to close said section and afterward secured by means of a latch 7 of any suitable construction. Within the bottom portion is a longitudinal insulating-partition S, and in the cover is a similar partition 9. When the cover is closed, the partitions 8 and 9 come together to form one, and thus divide the interior of the box into two compartments. Ineachcompartmentaretwodouble-blade terminals 11 12 and 13 14. On the cover are four blades 15 16 17 18, constructed to enter, respectively, into the double-blade terminals when the cover is closed. Between nect, respectively, with terminals 13 14, and
the minus mains 23 24 connect, respectively, with terminals 15 16. When the cover is raised, circuit in both mains is broken; but when it is closed circuit is established from main 21 to terminal 14, blade 15, fusible strip 19,
blade 16, terminal 13, and main 22 and in like manner from main 23 to terminal 11, blade 17, fusible strip 20, blade 18, terminal 12, and main 24c.
The foregoing construction is not herein claimed and illustrates merely one operative form of junction-box to which my coupling is suited.
At each end of the bottom portion 1 of the box is a semitubular projection 25, preferably enlarged at its outer portion 26 and provided witholugs 27 on each side. The interior of the end portion 26 of this projection may be roughened or corrugated. One convenient way of making these corrugations is by tapping a screw-thread therein.
28 is a semicircular clamp provided with lugs 29, which lugs 29 are adapted to meet the lugs 27 and to be secured thereto by bolts 30. The clamp 28 may also be roughened or corrugated inside. The plus and minus conductors entering at each end of the box are inclosed in a pipe 31, the end of which is socured between the semicircular projection 25 and the clamp 28. The exterior of this pipe may be roughened or corrugated to accord with the corrugations 0n the interior surface of the parts between which it is held; but corrugations or roughnesses either of the pipe or coupling are not essential to my invention, since I may omit them and simply use a smooth-surfaced pipe.
The above-described coupling device is the same at both ends of the box. It connects the pipe to the bottom portion 1 entirely irrespective of the other portions of the box, so that the connection will always remain even if the middle portion be removed and the cover lifted, as shown in Fig. 1. In order to close that part of the coupling which otherwise would be open, I provide on the ends of the middle portion 2 two semicircular projections 32, which have projecting flanges 33 to fit overa shouldered portion 34., thus making a tight joint.
In order to make connection between the pipe 31 and the box, the cover 3 is lifted, the middle portion 2 is removed, the end of the pipe is then led in the semicircular projection 25, the clamp 28 is put on and the bolts 30 are set up, and the conducting-wires 21 23 24 22 are secured to their respective terminals. The middle portion 2 is put in place on its fastening-screws 4, so that the flange 33 on projection 32 overlaps the clamps 28, and, lastly, the cover is closed down.
By reason of the foregoing construction the junction-box can be taken from any pipe system without disturbing the pipes themselves. It frequently happens that the conductors in a pipe get out of order or the junction-box itself needs repair, in which case it is necessary to disconnect the pipes from the box. If they are secured by a screw-thread connection, there is considerable di'fficulty in getting them out. Sometimes a part of the entire piping system has to be taken down be fore the boxes can be cleared. By my device the coupling itself is easily taken apart. The box can then be at once removed, leaving the pipes in their normal position, or a pipe can be taken from between two boxes without disturbing the boxes. So, also, with couplings arranged at each end of the boxes one conductor-pipe can be taken off from one end without disturbing the conductor-pipe at the other.
I claim 1. A support, a semitubular projection extending therefrom, a semi-annular piece of the same internal diameter as said projection and whereof the longitudinal axis is shorter than that of said projection, means for adjustably securing said piece to said projection to form a tubular clamping portion at the end thereof, and a detachable cover for the concavity of said projection between said tubular portion and said support.
2. A support, a semitubular projection extending therefrom, a semi-annular piece of the same internal diameter as said projection and whereof the longitudinal axis is shorter than that of said projection, said piece having a peripheral shoulder, means for adjustably securing said piece to said projection to form a tubular clamping portion at the end tion and whereof the longitudinal axis is shorter than that of said projection, means for adj ustably securing said piece to said projection to form a tubular clamping portion at the end thereof, and a semitubular cover for the concavity of said semitubular projection; the said cover being secured to the other section of said box and extending from said section to said tubular clamping portion.
4:. In combination with a box, a semitubular projection extending therefrom, a semiannular piece of the same internal diameter as said projection and whereof the longitudinal axis is shorter than that of said projection, means for adjustably securing said piece to said projection to form a tubular clamping portion at the end thereof and a separate section extending over said box and forming a cover for the concavity of that part of said semitubular projection which is not included in said tubular portion.
5.-In combination with a box comprising two sections, a semitubular projection provided with side lugs and extending from one of said sections, a semi-annular piece shorter than said semitubular projection and having side lugs to correspond to the side lugs of said projection, bolts connecting said side lugs and a semitubular cover extending from the other of said box-sections and to said semi-annular piece.
6. In combination with a box containing a terminal, a conductor secured to said terminal and a pipe inclosing said conductor, a semitubular projection on said box, a semiannular piece whereof the longitudinal axis is shorter than that of said projection, means for adjustably securing said piece to said projection to form a tubular clamping portion to receive said pipe, and a detachable cover extending over that part of said semitubular projection which is not included in said tubular portion.
