ZACHARY T. FRENCH AND WVILLIAM O. MEYER, OF BOSTON, MASSA- CHUSETTS. l
THREAD-WAXING DEVICE FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,729, dated July 7, 1903.
Application filed December 21,1898.- Serial No. 699,938. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ZACHARY T. FRENCH and WILLIAM C. MEYER, of Boston, county of Sufiolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Thread-Waxing Devices for Sewing-Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to improve and simplify the construction of thread-waxing devices for sewing-machines; and the invention consists, essentially, in a wax-compartment, a heating-chamber located beneath it which may be closed or sealed, a heating medium-such, for instance, as oilcontained in said heating-chamber, and a heating device immersed in the heating medium contained in said chamber, which may be a steam-pipe adapted to be connected with a steam-supply pipe; also in the construction of the heating-chamber, which is located beneath the wax-compartment and especial-1y adapted to receive a supply of oil to be used as the heating medium for the wax in the Wax-compartment; also in the construction of the means employed for heating the oil contained in the aforesaid heating-chamber.
Figure 1 shows in side elevation a Waxpot embodying this invention; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the wax-pot shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a horizontal section of the waxpot shown in Fig. 1, taken on the dotted line co m, the bottom of the wax-compartment being broken away to show the heating device contained in the heating-chamber.
The Wax-compartment a is made of any I suitable shape and size, and it has formed on it at one side a lateral projection b, which extends from the top to the bottom of the wax-pot. The side projection b is preferably formed integral with the wax-compartment. The projection b is recessed, as at a, to provide a chamber which opens into the wax-compartment, thereby enabling the wax to enter thechamber, and said recess is'made to extend below the bottom of the wax-compartment to provide a Well a at such point.
The projection b is provided with two vertical holes or passages, one, as 12, extending from the top of the projection down to the top of the chamber a and the other, as c,
extending from the bottom of the chamber a to the bottom of the projection, and said holes are arranged in-verticalalinement and made large enough to receive the thread, so as to serve as thread-guides. Thehole cis also made large enough to receive within it the thread-stripper, which is herein shown as a rubber disk 0', having a central hole through it, a tubular block bearing upon said disk, having a shoulder 0 anda screwthreaded plug 0 fitted onto said block 0 and bearing against the shoulder 0 by means of which the pressure of said disk maybe regulated to thereby vary the size of the hole through the disk.
It will thus be seen that the thread is carried through the thread-guide b and through the chamber a and thence through the threadguide 0 and thread-stripper, and as the two thread-guides are located, respectively, above and below the chamber a in vertical alinement the thread will be carried in a vertical direction.
The bottom of the wax -compartment is more or less inclined and is so disposed as to decline toward the chamber a. Beneath the wax-compartment orv a heating-chamber d is provided, which is made of an area substantially corresponding to the area of the waxcompartment, and said heating-chamber dis or may be formed integral with the Wax-compartment and provided with an open bottom,
her. A plate (1 made large enough to close said opening (1, is provided, which is adapted to be secured to' the bottom of the heatingchamber at by screws (1 or otherwise, said plate resting upon suitable packing, whereby the reservoir (1 is made oil-tight. The heating device is attached to said plate d being removable-with it, and as herein shown said heating device consists of a steam-pipe 2, formed inv two small loops and attached at its ends to screw-threaded nipples e, which are screwed into the holes provided for them in the plate 01 The nipples c are screwed which may be of any suitable size and shapeas, for instance, herein a circular opening 01 is formed at the bottom of said heating-(sham into the inner or under side of said plate d so that the heating device will be located upon the inner or under side thereof. The holes into which the nipples e are secured pass through the plate CF, and nipples e are screwed into said holes at the outside of the plate, to which inlet and outlet steam-pipes f are attached. When the plate d is secured to the bottom of the heating-chamber, the steam-pipe 6 will be contained in the heating-chamber and the steam will be free to circulate through it.
An upright tube or pipe 9 is secured to the heating-chamber 01, through which the oil will be admitted, and said tube or pipe g is closed or sealed by a screw-cap 9'. Oil is supplied to the reservoir in preference to water, for the reason that it does not evaporate and obviates the many objections now' common to the use of water and can be heated to a high temperature. The heating-chamber d-is normally closed or sealed when in use, in consequence of which the oil contained in said closed or sealed chamber may be heated under pressure. 7
The steam-pipe e employed will be made quite small and but little pipe used, and the heating-chamber will be made quite large, so that the intense heat of the steam-pipe will be absorbed by the oil which will be employed as the heating medium for the wax contained in the wax-compartment. Thus boiling or burning the wax is prevented.
The upright pipe g, which is closed at its upper end, is at all times in open communication with the heating-chamber,and thereby serves as a chamber to provide for expansion of the oil in the chamber, the air-cushion formed therein being more or less compressed by the expansion of the oil.
We claim- 1. In a wax-pot, a Wax-compartment, a closed or sealed heating-chamber located beneath it containing a liquid-heating medium and having an upright supply-pipe g provided with a cap for closing or sealing it and a heating device immersed in the liquidheating medium in said heating-chamber, substantially as described.
2. In a wax pot, a wax compartment, a heating-chamber located beneath it having an open bottom, abottom plate for said heating-chamber having holes through it, a steampipe, the ends of which are attached to nipples screwed into said holes at the inner or under side of the plate, and nipples screwed into the holes at the opposite side of the plate to which inlet and outlet steam-pipes are connected, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
