SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 732,574, dated une 30, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE 0. MAY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chi cago, in the countyof Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Artificial Fuel and Process of Making the Same, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to artificial fuel, my more particular object being to work up garbage, so as to get rid of the offensive product at the same time the fuel is made.
My invention includes both the fuel and the process whereby the same is made.
I first assert the garbage in order to remove all pieces of iron, glass, tin, and any other undesirable substances. I next run the garbage through a crusher, thereby breaking up any hard or brittle substances which may be present and reducing all softer substances to a pulp. To the garbage thus treated is then added about three per cent. of calcuim chlorid for the purpose of serving as a disinfectant. Any water which may be present in the mixture is removed, preferably, by evaporation. This leaves a composite residual mixture perfectly dry and odorless. I next place this substance in a mixing-tank. I then take four hundred pounds of crude oil and add thereto a small quantity of potassium protoxid, preferably in a proportion representing about two and one-half per cent. of the weight of the oil. The potassium protoxid causes the oil to coagulate and form a saponaceous or soapy matter which has more solidity than the-0il. This saponaceous matter is then added to the dry substance in the mixingtank in the approximate proportion of'four hundred pounds to a ton of the dry substance, the whole being thoroughly stirred. The resulting mixture is ready for use as a fuel; but I prefer to add about three percent. of coal-tar as a binding agent and then mold the mixture into briquets, which may be pressed in the usual manner. The product thus formed is a very good fuel and makes a dry clear flame, which is easily controlled. The
substance is not so inflammable as to be dangerous and yet can be readily burned. It is entirely free from any offensive odor and is clean to the touch. It is also impervious to Water and contains ninety-eight per cent. of actual heat-more than any other fuel in existenceaud has no smoke or odor.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The process, herein described, of making fuel from garbage, which consists in crushing the garbage, adding calcium chlorid thereto, drying the substance thus formed, and adding a saponaceous substance to the dried residue.
' 2. The process, herein described,ofmaking fuel from garbage, which consists in crushing the garbage, adding thereto a disinfecting agent, drying the substance thus formed,
and adding saponaceous matter to the dried residue.
3. The process, herein described, of making fuel from garbage, which consists in crushing the garbage, adding calcium chlorid thereto, drying the substance thus formed, adding a saponaceous substance to the dried residue, then adding a binding agent, and finally pressing the admixture into briquets.
4. The process, herein described,of making fuel from garbage, which consists in crushing the garbage, adding thereto a disinfecting agent, drying the substance thus formed, adding saponaceous matter to the dried residue, then adding three per cent. of coal-tar as a binding agent, and finally pressing the admixture into briquets.
5. The process, herein described,of making fuel from garbage, which consists in crushing the garbage, adding three per cent. of calcium chlorid thereto, drying the substance thus formed, adding saponaceous matter, and finally dividing the admixture into portions suitable for the market.
6. The process, herein described, of making fuel from garbage, which consists in crushing the garbage, adding thereto three per cent. of calcium chlorid, removing any water present, adding to the residue a substance formed by adding together an oily substance and a small portion of potassium protoxid, and finally pressing the entire mass into briquets.

ing the garbage, adding thereto three per cent. of calcium chlorid, removing any water accompanying the mass thus formed,and adding to the dry residue, in the approximate proportion of four hundred pounds to a ton of the same, a substance formed by adding to crude petroleum two and one-half per cent. of potassium protoxid, and finally adding three per cent. of coal-tar pitch as a binding agent, and then forming the entire admixture into briquets.
9. The artificial fuel, herein described, which consists of dried garbage products, calcium chlorid, crude petroleum, potassium protoxid, and a binding agent.
10. The artificial fuel, herein described, which consists of dried garbage products, crude oil admixed therewith in the approximate proportion of four hundred pounds of said oil to a ton of said garbage products, and approximately two percent. of potassium protoxid, and approximately three per cent. of coal-tar as a binding agent.
