UNITED STATES-l VILLIAM L. PAUL, OF BRADLEY, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO DAVID BRADLEY 'Patented June 16, 1903.
MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF BRADLEY, ILLTNOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 731,067, dated June 16, 1903.
application filed August 11, 1902. Serial No. 119,249. (No model To all 1077/0777, it may conccrn:
Be it known that LWILLIAM L. PAUL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bradley, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvemehts in Plows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates'fto plows; p and its object is to provide new and improved means by which the plow may be 'landed 77----that is to say, may be made to take more or less land in width-by means of mechanism constantly within the control of the driver during the operation of plowing. I accomplish this objeet as hereinafter desoribed, and as illustrated in the drawings.
That which I regard as new will be set forth in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a top or plan view.
Referring to the drawings, 3 indicates a frame, which is supported on land-wheel 11 and furrow-wheel 5.. Theframe 3 projects forward on the axle, hereinafter described, and is provided at its forward end with a clevis 30, to which the draft is applied for drawing the plow. The land-wheel 4 is carried by a bent axle 6, secured to the framework, and is operated in any well-known and approved manner, as by means of a hand-lever 7 andrack-bar S, to vary the depth of the cut. The furrow-wheel 5 is mounted in any well-known and approved manner upon the end of an axle 9 in such a way as to be raised and lowered thereon by means of the usual hand-lever 10 and rack-bar 11. The axle 9 is bolted or otherwise secured to the frame 3. As the means for raising and lowering the land and furrow wheels may be of any approved form and description and are no part of my present in-` vention, it is not necessary to describe them more fnllyhere.
' 12 indicates a beam which carries the plow 13. 14 indicates a block, which is pivoted on a Vertical pivot l'between straps 16 at the rear end of the frame-'3. The plow-beam 12 is bolted or otherwise secured to the block 14, thus forminga Vertical pivot upon which the plow-beam 12 may swing laterally from side to side.
12 above the plow 13.
vmore or less land in width.
17 indicates a rear caster-wheel, which is supported on a bent axle 18, carried by a bracket 19, which is bolted to the plow-beam The Vertical portion of the bent axle 18 is journaled in the rear end of the bracket 19 in order that the easterwheel 17 may be moved to one side or the other in the usual manner.
20 indicates a seat, which is supported upon a seat-beam 21, secured to the frame 3.
22 indicates a bell-cranklever, which is pivoted to a cross-bar 23 on the frame 3. The forward end of the bell-crank lever 22 is providedwith a slot 24, which engages a pin 25,
secured to and projecting upward from the,
forward end of the plow-beam 12.
26 indicates a hand-lever, which is pivoted to the frame 3 and is provided with the usual rack-bar 27 and ,accompanying thumb-lever and dog devices 28, which are adapted to lock 'the lever 26 in various positions on the rackthe hand-lever 26 is swung forward or back- Ward, the motion will be communicated to engagement of the slot 24 with the pin 25 the beam 12 and the attached plow will be swung laterally to one side or the other, according to whether it is desired to make the plow take If it is desired for any reason to have the plow take more vland in width, the hand-lever 26 will be swung backward a suitable amount, thus throwing the forward-end of the plowt-beam, and con- `sequen'tly the point of the plowshare, some- `the bell-crank lever 22, and by means of the IOO That v'which I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a plow, the combination with a frame, means for connecting said frame with the draft, of a beam not directly connected with the draft mounted on a snbstantially Vertical pivot on said frame and adapted to swing laterally thereon, means for swinging said beam on its pivot, and a plow supported by said plow-beam, snbstantially as desoribed.
2. In a plow, the combination with a frame, means for connecting said frame With the draft, and land and fnrrow Wheels monnted on said frame, of a plow-beam not directly connected with the draft monnted on a substantially Vertical pivot on said frame and adapted to'swing' laterally, means for swinging said plow-beam, and a plow monnt'ed on said plow-beam, subsfantially as described.
3. In a plow, the combination with'a frame, means for connecting said frame With the draft, and land and fnrrow Wheels supported by said frame, of a plow-beam not directly connected with the draft carried on a substantially Vertical pivot on said frame and adapted to swing late'rally thereon, a plow carried on said plow-beam, acaster-wheel car- `ried by said plow-beam, a hell-Crank level' 'pivoted to said frame and having one of its VVitnesses:
