EXTENSION-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 7 30,473, dated June 9, 1903,
Application filed November 25,1902. Serial No. 132,195. (No model.)
Paso, in the county of ElPaso, State of Texas, I have invented certain new and useful Iin-' provements in Extension-Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to extension-tables such as are employed for dining, and it has for its object to provide a table which may be easily and quickly adjusted to diiferent lengths and in which when the table is closed or adjusted to its minimum length the leaves will be contained in the body of the table instead of having to be removed therefrom, as is usual.
A further object of the invention is to provide a construction which will occupy a minimum of room when closed and in which the adjustment may be accomplished with ease and speed.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be understood from the following description. r
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numeralsof reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the table in closed position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken vertically through the table and showing one of the leaves in its extended-position and the other leaf in its folded position. Fig. 3 is a section similar to Fig. 2 and showingboth leaves extended. Fig. 4 is a section similar to Figs; 2 and 3 and showing both leaves folded. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the table. 4
Referring now to the drawings, thepresent table comprises abody including the frame 5, consistingof side portions having cornerblocks 6 in which are engaged the'supportinglegs '7 and upon the upper faces of the cornerblocks and flush. with the upper edges of the sides of the frame 5 are the longitudinal pieces 8, which are connected midway of their ends by the cross piece or brace 9, having transverse slots 10 in its under side and in which transverse slots are the depending lugs or stops 11. Against the under face of the cross piece or brace is secured the strip 12, the ends of which rest against the inner faces of the sides of the frame. The cross piece orbrace 9 projects slightly above the upper edge of side faces of the frame 5 and is vertically movable into and out of position to rest upon the cross-brace 9, said cross-brace and the strip 12 having alining perforations 15, which the frame 5, and the ends of the brace are receive the guide-pins 16, which are carried by and depend from the top 14, the brace 9 having metal plates 16 set flush in its upper face and perforated to aline with the perforations of the brace and strip to prevent wear of the brace.
Two extension- leaves 17 and 18 are provided, the thicknesses of which are such that they may lie upon the frame 5 and support the movable top let in conjunction with the brace 9, at which time said leaves will lie in contact with the side faces of the brace, while their outer edges will be flush with the corresponding edges of the top 14 or may lie spaced slightly inwardly therefrom, as do also the ends of the brace 9. The leaves 17 and 18 are carried upon the slide-bars 19, of which there are a pair for each of the leaves, and these 'slide-barsare engaged in slots 20 in the sides of the frame 5 and rest with their end portions in the slots 10 of the cross-brace 9, so that when the leaves are moved into and out of their folded positions the slide-bars will move in the 1 slots, the outward movement of the leaves being limited by the upturned ends of plates 21, which are secured to "the underfacesof the inner end portions of the bars 19 and are turned upwardly at their extremities to project beyond the upper faces of the bars.- The bars 19are tapered vertically in both directions from their middles, and as the under sides of the bars rest against the bottoms of the slots 20 the leaves 17 will be caused to rise as they are drawn outwardly and to gradually fall as they are movedinwardly. As the leaves move outwardly and upwardly the top let is raised until the leaves are drawn beyond the edges of the top, when the latter will be permitted to drop between the leaves to rest upon the bars 19 and the cross-brace 9 and with its upper face flush with the upper faces of the leaves. .When the leaves are to be moved to their folded positions, the top 14c is raised at its edges and the leaves pushed under it, the top resting upon the leaves, and as the leaves are pushed under the top the latter gradually sinks until the leaves reach the limits of their inward movements, at which time they will be flush with the upper face of the brace 9 and will support the top in conjunction therewith. It will thus be seen that there is provided a simple and efficient construction and one in which the top will be supported at both its central and edge portions when the leaves are extended and will be supported throughout its under face when the leaves are in folded position.
In practice modifications of the specific construction shown may be made and any suitable materials and proportions may be used for the various parts Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
\Vhat is claimed is An extension-table comprising a frame having supporting-legs and a transverse brace connected to the frame and extending above the upper edge thereof, the ends ofthe transverse brace having transverse slots extending longitudinally thereof, transverse pieces engaged in the slots of the brace and mounted upon blocks secured in the corners of the frame and to which the legs are attached, strips secured to the inner faces of the frame and upon which the cross-brace rests, said cross-brace having slots in its under side and stops therein, tapered slide-bars engaged in the slots and having fingers for contact with the stops to limit the movement of the bars, a strip secured against the under face of the cross-brace overthe slots to hold the bars therein, the frame having slots in which the bars are slidably received, and a top mounted upon the cross-brace and movable vertically therefrom to permit of passage of the leaves thereunder, said top being adapted to rest upon the brace and slide-bars flush with the upper faces of the leaves when the latter are drawn outwardly.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
