SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters PatentN o. 729,534, dated June 2, 1903.

To aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that'I, MARTIN P. BOSS, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Compression- (louplings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had 'to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is toprovide a compression-couplingforcouplingorconnecting shafting and fastening pulleys or hubs'to cylindrical shafts; and its nature consists in providing the sleeve or other device which forms the body of the coupling with a strong spring tongue or tongues and in providing means for fitting the tongue or tongues to the shafting and locking them to the same.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View with the coupling partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line 2 2'0f Fig. 4. Fig. '3 is a longitudinal section on line 3 3 of Fig. 5. is a cross-section on line 4 4- of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a cross-section on: line 5 '5 of Fig. 3.

Referring to the drawings, A indicates the coupling, and B B shafts. The coupling A is cast of steel in a single piece, and in its construction 1 indicates an interior projection extending its entire length and projecting inwardly to the central or shaftopening.
2 is an elastic curved tongue cast integral with the projection 1 and curved around nearly to the said projection, but leaving-a narrow key-space 4 between the end of the tongue and the projection 1. This tongue, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, forms the major portion of the central opening or core and has its free end normally lying at a distance from the axis of the coupling less than the radius of the shaft upon which the coupling is adapt- 2 is a similar tongue at the opposing end of the coupling, and with the exception of extending in' a reverse direction it is the same as'the tongue 2 and does not require a separate description. .These tongues are separated from eachother by a space 7 and from the exterior casting by the space 8, and at their free ends they are separated from the projection 1 by the space 4. The central The central opening or core is bored out by first driviuga key in the space 4, which springs the tongue outwardly, so as to enlarge the "hole, which is bored out in the usual manner.
The key is left in the space 4 until the coupling is placed in the required position, when it is withdrawn .and the tongue or tongues spring back and compress or grip the shafting in a firm manner. In order to lock each of thespring-tongues or to give a stronger compress on the shaft near the end of each of the tongues, I provide a ledge or protection 5, as shown, and I also provide a corresponding ledge or projection 6 in the space 3 0f the sleeve or coupling, so that, if desired, a key 8, Fig. 1, can be driven between the ledges 5 and 6 to look a tongue in position or to give additional compression. It will thus be seen that the locking-tongues are moved concentrically by the action of the key or by their inherent elasticity if a key is not used and by such movement embrace and grip tightly the object to be coupled. This concentric movement, giving a gripping action, as distinguished from a radial or clamping movement, is a characteristic feature of my invention.. In Figs. 4: and 5 the position of the tongue or tongues when not gripping the shaft is shown in dotted lines and in gripping position in full lines. By this construction a strong and efficient compression-coupling is provided. It Will readily be understood that a single tongue will be sufficient for attaching' small pulleys or hubs, while for a shaft-coupling the double form shown is of special value, as it gives a tongue for each shaft end, so that slight variations of diameter in the shaft ends will not prevent the smaller one from being properly compressed and held- My invention is not restricted to the construction specifially shown and described, except in so far as it is claimed, as various modifications may be made without departing from my invention.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
