PATENT OFFICE.
EASEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 728,653, dated May 19, 1903. Application filed November 14, 1902. Serial No. 131,388. (l lo model.)
Toall whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT T. ANTHONY, of Slatington, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Easels; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention is an improved easel and frame; and its object is to provide an easilyadjustable blackboard easel whereby the frame may be held securelyin place, be readily adjusted up or down upon the easel, and the inclination of the latter. can be easily regulated to suit the user. It is especially designed for use with childrens blackboards, but is also useful to artists when sketching or painting.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of the complete easel and board. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-section on line 3 3, Fig. 1; Fig. 4, an enlarged detail section on line 4 4, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of footpiece. 7 Y
The easel comprises a pair of parallel side bars A A and a leg 0. The bars A A are rigidly connected near their ends bycross pieces a a, the lower one being braced, as at a, if desired, to stiffen the frame. The bars A, moreover, are provided with longitudinal slots a near their upper ends, through which pass the ends of an adjustable rod B, which has a head b on one end, and its other end is threaded to engage and retain a thumb-nut b, by which the rod may be clamped in any position to which it is adjusted in slots at". This rod B transfixes screw-eyes c on a crossbar 0, attached to the upper end of leg 0, which, with bars A A, constitutes the easelframe proper. The bar 0 may also be connected to leg C by brace rods or wires 0 as shown, so as to stiffen the leg. By means of the rod-and-slot connection as described the leg 0 can be adjusted vertically relatively to bars A as well as swung to or from the latter and will uphold the bars in any desired inclined position with steadiness. Bars A,
or down on the bars or removed therefrom at will. The frame may be retained in position on the bars by plus; a engaging any of a series of holes a in the bars, as shown. The frame, as shown, is provided witha projecting shelf-board d at its lower edge, which forms a convenient holder for pencils, brushes, &c.
The utility of the easel, its capability of ready adjustment, the comparative rigidity of attachment of the'frame thereto, and the lightness and compactness of the whole will be readily understood from the illustration.
In order to facilitate the raising or lowering of the easel on the bars A, the latter may be provided with the foot-pieces E, each of which may be formed of a piece of stiff wire having its upper end driven orsecured in a hole in the lower end and inner side of the bar and retained therein by a staple e, the lower end of the wire being bent inwardly at right angles to the bar; When the board is to be shifted, the foot can be placed on piece E, thus holding the easel-frame down and facilitating lifting of the board.
Having thus described my invention, what I therefore claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon, is
1. In an easel, the combination of the connected parallel bars having longitudinal grooves, and slots; the rod transfixing the slots and adjustable therein, and the leg hinged to said rod; with the frame having tongues on its under side engaging the grooves in the bars, and adjustable pins on the bars for retaining the frame in position, substantially as described.
2. The herein-described blackboard-easel, comprising parallel-connected bars having longitudinal grooves, and short slots near their upper ends, a rod passing through said slots and provided with a thumb-nut for the leg hinged to said rod; with the frame having tongues on its under side engaging the grooves in the bars, and adjustable pins on the bars for retaining the frame in position, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT T. ANTHONY.
