' cnn-BARREL CASSVILLE, MISSOURI.
PROTECTOR.`
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 728,302, dated May 19, 1903.
Application led May 29, 1902.
Beit known that I, BENTON RoBBINs, a citizen of'the United States, residing at Cassville, in the county of Barry and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and Auseful Improvements in Gun-Barrel Protectors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and
as will enable others skilled in the art to which The invention relates to gun-barrel protectorsof that character adapted to be inserted into the barrel of a gun to exclude therefrom moisture, and thereby prevent the bor'e of the The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which shall be simple' of construction, durable in. use, comparatively inexpensive of production, and which is capato permit it to be carried inthe gun-case or in the pocket.
With this and other objects inview the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out it the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a crosssectional view, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing the device tied in a knot to enable it tol be convenientlyncarried in the coatpocket. Y p f Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes a coiled spring, preferably of a length to correspond to the length of the gun-barrel and hav# ing its coils or ccnvolutions relatively closely l 2-denotes a'sheath or covering made of absorbent iiexible material and of a length corresponding to the length of said spring. This sheath or covering is open at one end and closed at the other and .is frictionally secured to the spring, as shown in Fig. 2 of the draw-V ings, and indiameter is adapted to be equal Serial No. 109,470. Clloinodel.)
to or greater than the diameter'of the gunbarrel within which it is adapted to be placed.
5 denotes a plug exteriorly screw-threaded. This plugis screwed to the outer end .of the coiled spring, the coils of said spring at that end forming threads of the plug. The plug may be provided with a ring or other form of handle whereby the device may be easily withdrawn from the gun-barrel.
The device is adapted to be saturatedV with melted vaseline or gun-grease, preferably by unscrewing the plug and pouring the lubricant into the bore of the spring, through the coi-ls of which it will pass and be absorbedby the sheath.
In practice the device is inserted into the gun-barrel and left there until the gunis to be used, the implement being ofthe proper size to i'ill the barrel closely, thus keeping the oil constantly in contact with the inner surface of the barrel, whereby all moisture is excluded and the bore of the barrel protected from rusting and pitting. Agun after it has been used for shooting may without being cleaned be put away and kept for weeks with perfect safety against rust or pits by using this instrument, while without its use-the gun may be thoroughly cleaned and put away and then gather moisture and rust and become vantages of the invention will be readily un'- derstood without requiring an extended explanation. v
Various changes in the form, proportion,
and details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without, departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,- iscombination with an absorbent sheath open at one endand closed at the other, of a Inl a device of the character described, the l tightly-fitting closely-coiled spring arranged In testimony whereof I have hereunto vset within said sheath andvofa length cori'emy hand in presence of two subscribing wit- 1o sponding to the length of said sheath, and a messes. v 'screw-threaded plug adaptedvto be screwed v 5 into the open end of the said sheath into thev BENTON.
