THE News PETERS cov. Pnufuumm WhSHINGTON, n, c
UNITED STATES Patented May 12, l 903.
PATENT OFFIC OLIVER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 728,143, dated May 12, 1903. Application filed August 12,1902-' Serial No. 119,423. (No model.)
To all whom, it filial/ 007006771 Be it known that I, JULIAN HUGH THOMAS, a citizen of Canada, residing at Hamilton, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Olivers, of which thefollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in olivers; and it consists in the peculiar and advantageous construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the permit.- of it being. replaced with a block of claim appended.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the construction constituting the preferred embodiment of my invention with the upper portion of one of the standards broken away. Fig.2 is a transverse section taken on the broken line 2 2 of Fig. 1 with a portion of the hammer-helve broken away, and Fig. 3 is a detail plan with a portion of the hammer-helve broken away.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the several views of the drawings, referring to which- A is the base of my improved oliver; B B, standards fixed to and risingfrom the base; B B, braces connected to the base and standards; O, a pedal-lever fulcrumed at a on a support I), connected to the base; D, the head, and E the helve, of a hammer; F, a rock-bar interposed between the standards'and having trunnions c at its ends journaled therein;-G, a plate connected to or for-med integral with the rock-bar, preferably the former, and having the outwardly-extending lateral arm at at its forward end; H H, shackles by which the hammer-helve is preferably connected to the rocking support formed by the barF and plate G; I, a connection interposed between the pedal-lever O and the arm 01 of the hammersupport, and made up, by preference, of a bell-crank lever e, fulcrumed on one of the standards B and having its arms connected by a linkf, a link g connecting the lower arm of lever e and the pedal-lever and a sectional rod h connecting the upper arm of the lever e and the hammer-helve and having its sec tions connected by a turnbuckle, as shown; J, a resilient bar connected at one end to the base A and adapted to normally rest in the position shown in Fig. 1; K, a coiled spring interposed between and connecting the free portionfof said resilient bar and the base A, and L one or more coiled springs interposed between and connected with .the rear end of the hammer-helve and the forward free portion of the bar J. The hammer-head D may be of any suitable type without involving a departure from the scope of my invention; but-I prefer to make it of cast-iron and to provide it with a face i of steel, the said face being in the-form of a block and being removably secured in the head, this latter to different shape when desired.
My improved oliver is designed more particularly for use inconjunctionwith an ordinary anvil, and in practice it is placed at one side of the anvil, so the hammer-head D will strike on the same and so that the pedallever (3, which is preferably of sufficient length, will extendbeyond'the side of the anvil remote from the standards B; This arrangement will obviously enable a mechanic standing at the opposite side of the anvil with reference to the standards B to operate the hammer and-at the same time conveniently manipulate the work on theanvil.
, ---The parts of the oliver are shownin their working positions, and it will be readily observed that when the pedal-lever O is depressed the hammer-head'Dwill be thrown downwardly, also that when pressure is removed from the pedal lever the hammer head and helve will be quickly returned to the position shown in Fig.1 by. the springs connected therewith. It will also be observed that when it is not desired to use the oliver the hammer may be thrown back, so that its head rests above and in rear of the vertical median line of the standards B and the rear end of its helve rests between the lowerportions of the standards. When the hammer is thrown back, as described,'the arm at of the plate G will bring up against theuppor end of one of the standards B and'se'rve as a stop to limit the backward movement of the hammer. The hammer will remain of itself in the idle position statedy-but it may-be returned to its working position by simply swinging its head forwardly.
In virtue of the free portion of the resilient bar J being connected with the base A by the coiled spring K and with the hammer-helve ing of the same.
by one or more coiled springs L it will be observed that subsequent to a downward movement of the hammer-head said head will be caused to rebound to a position above or beyond its normal position, so that its own weight will add to the power of the succeeding blow. It will also be observed that the resilient bar and the springs connecting the same to the base and the hammer-helve constitute a very strong and durable means for raising the ham mer-head subsequent to down- Ward movements thereof.
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear, and exact understand- I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to such specific construction and relative arrangement of parts, as such changes or modifications may be made in practice as fairly fall within the scope of my invention as claimed.
Having described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
In an oliver, the combination of a base,
standards fixed on and rising from the base, a hammer-support interposed between the standards, and having trunnions journaled in the same, and also having a lateral arm on its forward portion, arranged whenthe hammer-head is swung rearwardly beyond the vertical plane of the trunnions, to bring up against the upper end of one of the standards, a hammer-helve arranged on and connected to said support, a pedal-lever fulcrumed on a support rising from the base, a connection between said lever and the lateral arm of the hammer-support, a resilient bar connected at one end to the base, a coiled spring interposed between and connecting the free portion of said barand the base, and one or more springs interposed between and connecting the free portion of said bar and the rear portion of the hammer-helve.
'In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JULIAN HUGH THOMAS.
