PATENT OFFICE.
CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,119, dated May 5,1903.
Application filed June 14, 1902. Serial No. 11 1.654. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. FARISH, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Chairs, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a rear elevation of my improved- Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22,
chair, Fig. '1; and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top plan view of the chair-back, portions being shown in section to more clearly illustrate the cooperation of the several parts.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in chairs,'theobject being to:
2 the front legs, and'3 the rear legs, said rear legs extending upwardly and forming uprights or standards 4 for the chair-back. Fixedly mounted between the standards 4 isa panel 5, which serves to brace the chair-back and constitutes one member of theclothespress, which I will now describe.
6 indicates a movable panel hinged at its lower end to the stationary panel 5 by hinges 7. These hinges are preferably made of spring metal and adapted to yield slightly to accommodate the press to trousers (or other articles of clothing) of varying thickness and which will exert a pressure upon the articles to be pressed.
The movable panel is provided near its upper end with notched extensions 8, which are adapted to project through suitable openings in the fixed panel and engage with a pivoted leaf-spring 9, mounted on, the rear of said fixed panel, and whose tendency is to pull the two panelstogether to exert a pressing action. A suitable hook 10 may also be provided at the rear of the chair, upon whicha coat may be suspended either directly therefrom, or a suitablecoat-hanger 11, as shown in dotted lines inFig. 1, may be provided.
12 indicates a box arranged under the bot tom of the chair for the reception of shoes,
850., access being had thereto through a suit;
able door 13.
I am'a'ware that minor changes in thecon 'struction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts may be made and subst1-..
tut-ed for those herein shown and described withoutin the least departing from the napapel catches projecting from'said hinged panel adapted to pass beyond the fixed panel,
anda flat spring pivotallysupported on the exteriorof the fixed panel and adapted to cooperate tlierewith to yieldingly lock-said panels in position; substantially as described.
In testimony .whereof I hereunto affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses,
this 9th day of June, 1902.
EDWARD A. FARISH. Witnesses:
GEORGE BAKEWELL,
G. A. PENNINGTON.
