Lenser@ Patent No. 72,696, .zaad December 24, 1867.

IMPROVBMBNT IM GRAIN-semences.
'ro ALL wHoM 1T MAY ooNoERN.;
Be it known that I, F. SWIFT, assigner to myself-and Horace Wilson, both-oi` Hudson, in' the county of Lenawee, and in the State of Micl1igan,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain-Separatore; and do hereby declare thatthc following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, A represents the frame of' a grainsseparator, which is constructed in any of the known and usual ways. B represents the fan-drum, and C the fan-shaft. This shaft C is provided'at its cen-tre with a pulley, D, and upon each side'of this pulley with aset of wings,E E. The wings upon one side are not placed opposite those upon the other, but have their endsopposite the spaces in each, so that they act as two independent wheels for making a constant current of air.v I do not usev a shoe in this machine, but, in lieu thereotwo shaking or vibrating-screens. Gand I represent these screens. The upper screen G is hung in the usual way, with its back end upon a metallic spring, cZ. The forward end of this screen rests upon a pulley, k, and is connected to said pulley by means oi'a pin, a. This pinis placed near the periphery of the pulley, and passes through aslot in the screen, and when the pulley is reversed it gives both an end and sidewise vibratory motion to the screen. 'The pulley K' is secured upon the upper end of a vertical shaft, J. This shaft has a portion of it cut away, as seen at e, and thiseccentrio portion `lies in a slot in the vforward end ofthe lower screen I. By revolving the shaft J, its eccentric portion e gives an end and siclowise movement to the lower screen. The forward end of this lower screen rests upon the upper ends of two springs, L L These springs are secured at their lower ends to a bar, N, which is raised or lowered at pleasure, and secured in any desirable position by m'eans of the set-screw o. The roar end of the screen I rests upon a crossbar, M, which-passes through the frame near the bottom ofthe fan. A band, H, passing from the pulley D to pulley K, com1nunicates motion from the fan-shaft to the screens. When the fan-shaft is revolved, the shaft J causes the two screens to vibraterapidly. The blast from the fan passes between the two screens, and carries away all chai?` and dust, dto., from the grain, as it falls from the upperto the lower screen, and thus eil'ectuelly cleansit. i
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire te secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The fan-shaft C, provided with two sets of wings, seouredon in dill'erent positions, and with a pulley between them, as and for the purpose set forth.` v
2. In combination with the fan, as herein constrlicted, the shaft J, band H, pulleys D K, screens GI, with springs L L, and bar N, all constructed, arranged, and'operating substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have'hereunto set my hand and seal, this Sith day of October, 1867.
