JOE L. ULLATHORNE, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
.SEED=PACKET HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 726,380, dated April 28, 1903. Application filed July 8, 1902. Serial No. 114,766. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, J on L. ULLATHORNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, Shelby county, State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improve and store packages of seed, so that they can be easily inspected or withdrawn for inspection or sale.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my seed-packet holder empty. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a case having three shelves, two of which are filled with seed-packetholders. Fig. 3isa reduced-scale pattern of one of the boxes.
Referring now to the drawings, in which like numerals indicate the same or like parts'in all the views, myholder consists of abox 1, having a back 2, sides 3, a bottom l, a strip 5 at or near the bottom across the front, (which is open,) and a strip 6 across the front about two-thirds of the way to the top. This strip is so placed because the packets which the boxes are designed to hold are of paper and must necessarily be held intermediate their length if they are to be eflectually supported and because as the seed-packet holder becomes empty the bottoms of the packets being the heavier, because the seed have settled there, may slip to the rear and the tops fall forward out of the holder if the said top strip is too near or at the top of the holder. In making these boxes I first cut out a pat tern, such as is shown in Fig. 3, making the bottom 4c and back 2 of snfficient width to accommodate the width of packet desired and making the depth of the sides 3 and 3 just what is needed to accommodate the length of the packet and scoring the paper along the dotted lines. The sides 3 are first folded up at right angles to the base 4, and the back 2 is brought up against them and at S and passed through-both pieces 3 and 3 on opposite sides and are then bent back, as shown, to hold the said sides together.
.The packets of seed 9 are placed in the box from the top and when the seed are slightly shaken down bulge outward at the bottom, filling the shape of box shown more or less completelyand evenly. When placed in the case 10, each holder may be withdrawn and filled separately and then may be withdrawn for examination or removal of seed-packets. After a box becomes nearly empty a wad of paper may be stuffed behind the packets to hold them forward, giving the display always the effect of a full case.
The shape and size of the holders may be varied at will to suit different-sized packages or different numbers of them. In the case shown the lower portion is reserved for bulk seed.
Having now fully described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. A seed-packet holder, consisting of a box having a bottom, sides folded upward from said bottom, a back folded upward from said bottom and sides folded forward from said back, the two sets of sides being united into one by a cross-strip bent to form a shoulder at each end to hold the sides apart and having its ends passed through said sides and then bent against said shoulders to clamp v the sides together, substantially as shown i 3. In a seed-packet case, the combination In testimony whereof I have signed my with an open-front boX, having a plurality of name to this specification in the presence of [O shelves, of refinovable cgiipartmendtsheach betwo subscribing witnesses. lng open at t e top an ron an aving a 5 retaining-strip acrosssaid front near the bot- J ULLATHORNE' tom and a second retaining-strip across said Witnesses:
front intermediate the bottom and top of J. H. WEATHERFORD, same, substantially as shown and described. W. M. KYLE.
