To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES HENNESSEY, a citizen oftheUnitedStates,residingatlvlarion, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Shoe-Lace Fasteners, of which the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is aspecification, like characters representing like parts in all the figures.

My invention relates to fasteners or holding devices for the ends of lacings used in any kind of wearing-apparel, but more particularly for lacings for boots, shoes, gloves, and like articles.

The object of my invention is to provide a fastener which shall be simple in construction, effective in use, cheap of production,

practical, and susceptible of ornamentation.

Particularly, my object is to provide a fastener to be used in connection with a single-lace fastening for closing all kinds of apparel in connection with which it may be found practicable.

To the above ends, therefore, the invention consists in the parts, features, and combinations hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shoe, showing my fastener applied thereto, this View showing the fastener in place on the shoe when the latter is properly laced. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view ofthe fastener on the line w 08 of Fig. 1, showing the manner of applying the lace to the pin or bar of the fastener. Fig. 3 is a plan showing a portion of a glove with my fastener and lace in place, the lace being slack and the fastener hanging away from the glove to illustrate the manner of applying the same.

Primarily, it is to be observed that the contemplated use of the fastener is in connection .with articles of-apparel which have a slit or opening to be closed by drawing the adjacent edges together and which have, usually, adjacent the edges of the slit or opening a plurality of holding devices, such as eyelets or hooks, adapted to receive the lace, cord, or ribbon.

Referring now to the details of my invention, the fastener in the form contemplated of the drawings consists of a concavo-cow vexed head or body portion 0, plain or ornamental, having as a securing medium a trans verse pin or bar e, secured thereto in any suitable way and adapted to hold the looped end of the lace. This fastener is to be used in connection with an ordinary but extra eyelet h, disposed as hereinafter described. It is to be noted that the head 0 is substantially fiat on the bottom or concaved side 6 providing a rim 6 to enable it to lie flat upon the article, and that the pin or bar is so secured as to bridge the concavity e and be well Within the same, so that the head may be drawn down closely to the shoe or other article and make a neat appearance. To enable this latler effect to be secured, the concavity of the headis made in diameter-slightly greater than that of the eyelet 7L employed. The concavo-convexed head or body portion 0 has two functions, the first being to pro vide a cover or shield for the looped end of the lace, as shown in Fig. 1, and the second being to providea base or foundation or setting for some ornamental figure, jewel, or design, it being clear that said body part may be etched or otherwise ornamented or may be so carved or constructed as to afford a setting for a jewel or ornament.

The details of my fastener having been described, it nowremains to note the manner of using the same. The shoe, glove, or other article is provided with an extra hole, disposed at a suitable point outside the line of the usual holding devices wt, preferably near the lower end of the latter, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. In such hole the eyelet 72, is secured, and the end of the lace m is then looped about or tied to the pin or bar-e, as shown in Fig. 2e. g., by forming a small loop in its end, drawing the same over the bar 6 between the latter and the head 0, and then inserting its other end in the loop and drawing the lace tightly about the bar a. lace will then be passed inwardly through the eyelet h, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, then outwardly through the adjacent eyelet of the series of holding devices, and the shoe or glove subsequently fastened as provided.

Having thus described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is A fastener for articles of apparel consisting of a coucavo-convexed head having a fiat bottom, or rim, surrounding the concavity, and also having a straight bar, or pin, located well within, and extending from side to side of, the concavity, so as to bridge the same, whereby said fastener is specially adapted to be used with a singlelace and may be drawn closely to, and lie fiat upon, said article, sub stantially as described.
