Description

` UNITED p STATES J. E WITHERS, OF TORONTO, CANADA WEST.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR MAKING PLUG-TOBACCO,
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 72,578, dated December 24, 1867.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, J. E. WITHERS, of Toronto, Canada West, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Making Plug-Tobacco and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. y
This invention relates to a machine for making plug-tobacco; and consists of a series of rollers pressing' the tobacco in troughs running on fiange-rollers. A large wheel revolving in a transverse direction shifts the troughs onto a series of rollers revolving in the oppo-' site direction, by which they are carried back to the end from which they started. An inclined knife removes the tobacco from the troughs when suflici'ently pressed. e
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is-a front, and Fig. 2 a back, view of my machine. Fig. 3 is a top view thereof Fig. 4, a vertical section, longitudinal at line w x of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5, a transverse section at line y y of Fig 4. e
Similar letters of 'reference indicate like parts. i
A is a wall or framing, in which the. drivin gwheel B is journaled, as also the sheav'e-pulleys C O C and pulleys C' G' C', driven by the endless band D, in manner as shown, or by any equivalent method, by which a simultaneous moton n the same direction is imparted to G C (Land to the flange-rollers E E E on the opposite side of the journalrame A. The sheave-pulleys C G C are of the same size. The flange-rollers E E E are also of one size and arrauged on the same' level. I
F F are troughs, in which the tobacco is laid and fed to the machine at end Z, between the rollers G G G (jourfialed in A) and flangerollers E E E. On the troughs reaching the knfe K the tobacco is by it removed to the shelf H, while the trough passes on under the knife, the slot l affording room for the side of the trough to pass. Whenthe trough is emptied by the knife it is pressed on by the trough next behind it until its end is clear of the journal-&ame inwhich the reverse rollers M M are journaled, when the large wheel N, revolving transversely, feeds the trough to the rollers M M M, by which they are carried back to the end Z of the machine.
V The wheel N and rollers M M M may be driven by the endless bands P Q, or by gear and miter wheels, or by any other known mechanical device for changing the direction of motion. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new., and desire to' secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The flange-rollers same direction, in combination with the rollers G G G, in manner substantially as and for the purposes described. 2. The inclined knife K, removing the tobacco or other substance from, and in combination with, the troughs F or other place of deposit, substantially as described. u
3. The fiange-rollers E E E, revolving in the same direction, in combination with the wheel N, revolving in a transverse direction, sub stantially as and for the purposes described.
4. The fiange-rollers same direction, in combination with the rollers M M, revolving in a reverse direction, in manner and' for the purposes substantially as herein. shown and described.
