IMPROYED GARGOUPLING @La Sdgrhnh maar tu ir 11u52 @litters .rtnrt mn mating ptn nf its stmt.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CON CERN Be it k-nown that I, ROBERT GooLE, of Abingdon, 1n the county of Knox, and State-of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Coupling; -and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and usethe samerefer ence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciication.
This invention relates to a new and improved method of connecting the cars of a railroad-train together; and it consists in a peculiar arrangement of hooks and links by which the cars are coupled together, and in a detaching-shaft, with arms thereon, by which the cars are uncoupled or the hooks detached, as I will proceed to describe.
Figure I is a top or plan view of the arrangement, showing two cars coupled together according to my plan.
Figure 2 shows a vertical side view of the same, (partly in section.)

A represents the two cars or truck-framcs3 B are the bumpers attached thereto in the ordinary manner; C represents the coupling-links, and D the coupling-hooks. These hooks and links are attached, by pins or hinged connections, to blocks E on the frame, and they are so adjusted in the blocks that they lie in a hori zontal position, or so that when the cars come together they-are self-coupling. The inclined head of thehooli,V
a strikes the end ofthe link, andis raised thereby, so'that the hooks drop over and into the links, as seen in fig. 2, when the cars are coupled. F F represent horizontal shafts, (one on every car,) which extend across them, as seen in the drawing.. On one end of each of these shafts there is a lever or bar, g, by which the shaft is worked or operated.` Attached to each shaft there are two arms. One, L, extends forward to raise the hook on the opposite car, and the other, t', extends back and raises the hook on its own car. This arm z' is slotted,
and a bolt, J, which is attached to the back end of the hook, works in this slot, thedarm t' bearing against the head of the bolt, as seen in the drawing. K is a lever, which is connected to the bar g on the shaft byachain, Z. The lever K is attached to the side of the car by a staple, o, as seen. This arrangement of the lever and chain is for the purposeA of operating the shafts from the top of the car or when on the platform.
It will be seen that when the shaft F of either car is turned 'or partially revolved, both hooks will be raised and the ears uncoupled, and that this can be done from the ground or from the platform or top of the car.
By duplicating the coupling, as in the drawing, the connection is rendered more safe from accident; but I do not confine myself to this particular arrangement, as the couplings may be used singly, as in ordinary cases, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The bar g upon the shaft F, provided with the slotted arm a', fitting over the head of the set-screw J in the inner end of the pivoted hook D, in combination with the lever K and chain Z, as herein described for the purposes specified.
2. The arm h, in combination with the hooksD'and shaft F, as herein described, for the purpose specified. i
' 3\. The car-coupling, constructed as described, consisting of the hooks D and links C upon each side of the draw-heads B, rock-shafts F, bar g, arms 7L, slotted arm t', set-screw J, chain Z, and lever K, all constructed and arranged to operate as herein shown and described. v
ROBERT GOOLE.
