GEORGE E. HANNAN AND FRANK N. LUCAS, OF JONESBORO, INDIANA.
WINDOW-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 724,466, dated April 7, 1903. Application filed September 11, 1902. Serial No. 122,997. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE B. HANNAN and FRANK N. LUCAS, residing at J onesboro, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Window- Lock, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in window-locks in which a pawl or click in the fastening operates as a latch in the keeper; and the objects of our invention are, first, to provide means of clasping and fastening the upper and lower sash of windows together; second, to aflord means of automatically looking such windows and facilitating the opening and closing of the same from the inside, and, third, to provide suitable and effective means of preventing the opening of such win dows from the outside. We attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the entire window-lock. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the keeper of the lock, and Fig. 4 is a View of the side elevation of the entire lock in operative position on the window-sash.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The lock-box 1 carries the catch or pawl 3, pivoted at 8 to the inside of the lock-box and having at its end the hook 15, adapted to engage the spur 9 within the keeper 2. The flanges 11 of the keeper and corresponding flanges of the lock-box have the perforations 12, 13, and 14 to facilitate the attachment of the parts 1 and 2 by screws or other suitable means to the window- sash 16 and 16 and hold them firmly in operative position. A lift 4 is provided by which to raise and disconnect the pawl 3 from the spur 9 in the opening 10 of the keeper 2. The keeper is attached on top of the lower bar 16 ofthe upper sash and inside the glass 17 and facing the lock-box, which is similarly attached on top of the upper bar 16 of the lower sash opposite to and in alinement with the keeper. Both said window- bars 16 and 16 and the glass 17 and 17 are shown in section in Fig. 4. The keeper is provided with an inner spur 9 on either side to engage the pawl, thereby making the keeper reversible. By means of the lift 4 the pawl may be manipulated to unlock the sash and facilitate the lowering of the upper sash 16 and the raising of the lower sash 16. The helical spring 5 is fastened at 7 to the lockbox and attached at 6 by suitable means, so that ample tension is exerted on the pawl to draw and hold the same firmly in engagement with the spur 9 in the keeper, The manipulation of the pawl by means of the lift will entirely efiectuate the lockin g and unlocking of the window; but we prefer the use of the spring 5, which renders the locking of the window entirely automatic when the windowbars 16 and 16 are brought together in closing the window. The positions of the pawl and spur and the related parts are such that any attempt from the outside to force the pawl from the keeper by inserting any instrument between the sash- bars 16 and 16 will bring the two in closer relation and frustrate such attempt.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in a window-lock, of a combined pawl and lift and support thereof, a connecting-spring between said pawl and its said support, a reversible keeper having internal spurs adapted to engage said pawl, sfiubstan tially as shown, for the purposes speci- In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
