UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD A. HURON, OF ORIPPLEOREEK, COLORADO.
SPECIFICATION formin part of Letters Patent No. 723,674, dated March 24, 1903. Application filed September 6 1902. Serial No. 122,407- (No model.)
To a. whom. it may concern;
Be it known that I, RICHARD A. HURON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cripplecreek, in the county of Teller and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Ties, of which the following is a specification. 7
My invention relates to railroad-ties, and has for its object to so construct the same that it will be cheap, durable, easily manufactured, and positive in operation.
In the drawings forming a part of this specificatiomand in which like symbols of reference represent corresponding parts in the several views, Figure l is a top plan view of my invention; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section;
Fig. 3, a bottom plan view; Fig. 4, a cross-' section on line 4 4, Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow; and Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
1 indicates the rails; 2, the cross-ties; 3, a holding-plate adapted to be secured to the tie, and 4: an adjustable wedge-shaped holding-plate having a longitudinal slot 9.
5 is a slot formed in the tie and having at its sides seats or recesses 6, and 7 indicates lugs or projections on the tie for the purpose of holding the adjustable wedge in its proper relative position on the tie.
The tie is preferably formed of soft steel or like metallic substance, having a trough shape from its under side; but of course wood or the like may be used with the fastening device disclosed in my invention. The projections 7 are struck up from the metal tie; but I reserve the right to use other fastening means in lieu of the lugs, if desired.
The operation is as follows: The permanent or rigid cleats or fastenings are first secured upon the tie. The adjustable cleats are then put in place and a T-bolt 8 ;passed through the holding-plate and through the slot 5 and then turned so that its endsengage and rest inthe seats 6, and by means of the slot formed in the cleats the same may be adjust ed on the bolt, the lugs holding the same in proper longitudinal position and the wedge shape giving the same a tendency to advance toward the rail.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A metallic railway-tie having a longitudinal slot formed in the same, seats formed in the tie transverse to said slot, lugs also struck up from the tie, an adjustable wedge-shaped cleat adapted to be held between said lugs, and a bolt to hold the cleat, said bolt having a head adapted to be received and held in the seats transverse to the slots.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' RICHARD A. HURON.
